(SANTA FE, N.M.) — Santa Fe’s leaders are calling for calm after a group of protesters toppled a controversial monument in the city’s plaza Monday during an Indigenous Peoples’ Day protest.

The protesters used chains and ropes to bring down the obelisk, which activists contend celebrates the killings of Native Americans. The defacing came at the end of a weekend-long protest by indigenous groups and other individuals who took over the plaza.

At one point during the demonstrations, two protesters chained themselves to the base of the monument, according to police.

Santa Fe Mayor Alan Webber and Police Chief Andrew Padilla told reporters during a news conference Tuesday that a small group of protesters plotted the destruction.

“Not every protester had this in their mind,” Padilla said.

The monument was erected in 1868, 43 years before New Mexico became a state, to honor Civil War Union soldiers. It has become a target of protesters for a plaque at its base that says the obelisk is dedicated to “the heroes” who fought “savage Indians.”

Mayor Webber has supported removing the obelisk, and a state-contracted crew attempted to do so over the summer, but it was too heavy for the crews, according to officials.

The mayor nevertheless condemned Monday’s vandalism.

“The violence and damage to a historical monument in the middle of our plaza will not help our community come together when we most need to do so,” he said in a video message Monday.

Padilla said officers arrested two of the protesters and were looking for more individuals who were involved in the monument’s removal. He said the protest broke up about 20 minutes after the monument came down, and ended peacefully without the officers using tear gas or excessive force.

“It was preservation of life over property. I stand by that decision,” Padilla said.

Webber said the City Council will be holding meetings this week to address the concerns of the protesters and move forward with the situation.

“It’s clear Santa Fe and New Mexico have more than hundreds of years of pain and suffering on many sides,” he said during the news conference. “The events of yesterday give us the opportunity to come together and stand up.”

Michael Kovac/Getty Images for Champagne Collet(LOS ANGELES) — It looks like the highly anticipated Coming to America sequel may not end up in theaters after all.

Variety reports that Paramount Pictures is in the process of selling Coming 2 America — the second installment of Eddie Murphy’s 1988 cult classic — to Amazon Studios for $125 million.

If the deal goes through, the film will bypass theaters and instead launch on Amazon Prime on December 18.

The sale of this project follows other notable films sold by Paramount to streamers, including Aaron Sorkin’s Trial of the Chicago 7 and the action comedy Lovebirds, both of which went to Netflix. The studio also sold the Michael B. Jordan led film, Without Remorse, to Amazon back in July.

As previously noted, Coming 2 America will bring back original cast members Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, James Earl Jones, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Garcelle Beauvais, Shari Headley and Paul Bates to reprise their roles in the sequel.

In the original film, Murphy stars as Akeem Joffer, the crown prince of the fictional African nation of Zamunda. In an effort to find a wife, Akeem, along with his trusty assistant Semmi, played by Hall, decide to travel to Queens, NY.

In the sequel, Akeem, who is set to become king, learns about a long-lost son and must return to America to meet his unlikely heir to the throne of Zamunda.

Little Big Town's Kimberly Schlapman releases holiday book inspired by adoption story

• No Comments • Country Music News

Hachette Book GroupLittle Big Town‘s Kimberly Schlapman turns a life-changing gift into a Christmas story in her debut children’s book, A Dolly For Christmas.

Released earlier this month, the book is inspired by Kimberly’s family’s journey to adopting daughter Dolly Grace after Kimberly and husband Stephen Schlapman struggled with infertility.

The singer’s eldest daughter Daisy would write letters to Santa asking him to bring her a sibling — a wish that finally came true when the family welcomed baby Dolly home days before Christmas in 2017.

The book explores themes of hope, love and family, with a foreword written by Daisy and illustrations by Morgan Huff.

“I just want people to be hopeful and to know that if they’re in the middle of a struggle, they are not alone. We walked those same roads, and they are very, very difficult,” Kimberly shared with People back in March. “But, in the end, there is restoration and there are children who are waiting for them.”

Kimberly has also authored a cook book, Oh Gussie!: Cooking and Visiting in Kimberly’s Southern Kitchen, released in 2015.

'Mad Max' prequel casts Anya Taylor-Joy as a younger Furiosa

• No Comments • Entertainment News

ANGELA WEISS/AFP via Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) — The Mad Max: Fury Road prequel has officially found its cast.

According to Variety, Anya Taylor-Joy will be taking on the title role in Furiosa, about a younger version of the character played by Charlize Theron in 2015’s Fury Road.

Thor‘s Chris Hemsworth and Watchmen actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II have also joined the cast.  Mad Max franchise creator George Miller will write, direct and produce the film.

Back in May, Miller spoke to The New York Times about the challenges of casting a younger Furiosa. He said he had considered using de-aging technology so that Theron, 44, could reprise her role, but he decided against doing so.

Taylor-Joy, 24, has most recently starred in the film Emma. She also appeared in M. Night Shyamalan’s Split and Glass.

No word yet on when Furiosa begins filming.
