Freeze Warning Update for Colorado, Jackson, and Wharton Counties

Good Afternoon!

Here is a quick update on the potential freeze tonight and Friday morning.

Changes since last update: Overall no real changes. Attached graphic shows freeze warning area and associated temperature forecast.

Forecast Temperatures: We think this will probably be the lowest temperatures expected. Temperatures could be a degree or two warmer depending upon winds and whether cloud cover clears sooner or later than expected. Northern areas of Harris County will be on the edge of freezing temperatures. Towns like Tomball and Cypress may have freeze while Kingwood may not. Areas south of there are not expected to freeze but we had to include Harris County in the warning since there is the potential for a freeze in part of the county.

Duration: Look for northern most areas to have 5-7 hrs of freezing temperatures while farther south only 1-3 hrs of freezing temperatures can be expected.

Precipitation: Light rain may be possible along the coast early this evening where temperatures are well above freezing otherwise no precipitation is expected. No precipitation is expected for areas where freezing temperatures are expected to occur tonight.

…Gale Warning in Effect Beginning 6 AM Thursday…

…Wind Advisory in Effect 6 AM through 6 PM Thursday…

Timing and Overview:
Strong cold front will push through South Texas tonight. As the front pushes offshore, gales will quickly develop behind it. Winds will begin ramping up between 3 and 5 am with Gales likely from 6 am. Winds over the coastal counties will increase during the morning and last through the afternoon with very gusty conditions expected.

Forecast:

Wind: Open Marine Waters: Sustained winds N 25 to 30 knots with gusts to 40 knots. 6 AM through Midnight

Bays and Waterways: Sustained winds 25 to 30 knots with gusts to 35 knots. 6 AM though 6 PM

Coastal Counties: Sustained winds around 30 mph with gusts near 40 mph.
Seas/Bays: Waves increasing to 7 to 10 feet nearshore…9 to 12 feet offshore Bays Rough to Very Rough
Impacts: Operating a vessel in gale conditions requires experience and properly equipped vessels. It is highly recommended that mariners without the proper experience seek safe harbor prior to the onset of gale conditions.

Loose items in yards and parking lots will likely be blown around. Items should be secured if possible. This is a particular concern this time of year with holiday decorations.
