Dear COVID-19: Thanks for the best vocals of Lee Brice's career

No Comments Country Music News

CurbIf you check out Lee Brice‘s fifth studio album, Hey World, you’ll find huge hits like “One of Them Girls” and “I Hope You’re Happy Now,” his duet with Carly Pearce — and what’s likely some of the best singing of his career.

Ironically, the COVID-19 pandemic is to thank, since the virus made it safer to work at home than going to a studio.

“I had to do all the vocals myself at my house,” Lee tells ABC Audio, “like engineer… have the mic here, sitting in front of the computer, hit play, record…”

“And then I got to sing like how I wanted to sing it,” he explains. “Nobody was telling me, ‘You should maybe do it like this, or try to scoop like that or whatever.’ I just got to sing it how Lee Brice would sing it.”

“And so these probably are my favorite vocals I’ve ever recorded,” he laughs. “They might not be the best, but they’re my favorite.”

Lee also had a hand in writing most of the album’s 15 tracks, save for the duet and three others.

“We did not write ‘Lies,’ which is kind of an ‘I Drive Your Truck’ special,” he says, “like if you hear that song, you’ve got to record it.”

“I did not write ‘Country Knows,'” he continues, “which I wish I would have.”

“And then ‘Soul’ was like one that was this different kind of thing I heard,” he remembers. “You should have heard the demo. I mean, it was way, way weird and out of the box. But I was like, ‘There’s something to that, that I guarantee you we can make into something really cool.'”

Lee’s new single is a track he did help write, the ballad “Memory I Don’t Mess With.”

Devin Dawson sets his sights on a simple legacy in “He Loved Her,” a tribute to his grandfather

No Comments Country Music News

Warner Music Nashville/Atlantic RecordsDevin Dawson tells the story of a simple life, well-lived, in “He Loved Her,” which is on the track list of his forthcoming The Pink Slip EP.

The song’s story line is a tribute to the singer’s grandfather.  Devin says that it’s one of the most important tracks he’s ever written.

“It’s inspired by my grandfather, Jerry. My rock,” he explains. “It’s different from other songs I’ve written because it’s simple and to the point, which is sometimes hard for me to accomplish as a writer. I’m proud of the words, the music, and the tribute it pays to one of the most important people I’ll ever know.”

From a musical standpoint, Devin’s well-known for having a rock edge and a metal background, and often blends that into his songwriting. But this time around, he sticks to carefree, classic country gold — a fitting tribute to “He Loved Her”’s message of simplicity.

The Pink Slip EP is due out on January 15; Devin’s already shared “I Got a Truck” and “Range Rover” off the six-track project.

FGL makes history with diamond certification of "Meant to Be"; may be back on the road in the "late spring"

No Comments Country Music News

John ShearerThursday night, Florida Georgia Line and a few dozen of their closest music industry pals jumped on Zoom to celebrate a record-breaking achievement.

With the Diamond certification of their hit “Meant to Be,” the duo is now the only country act in the 62-year history of the Recording Industry Association of America to have had two Diamond singles. The other is, of course, “Cruise.” Diamond certification recognizes 10 million units sold.

Tyler Hubbard, who is recovering from COVID-19, joked, “Thank you for the ego boost,” and said the most important thing for him is that his music with band mate Brian Kelley is “connecting.” “When I hear these numbers, that’s what I hear,” he said.

Noting that he’d spent the past 13 days quarantining on his bus, Tyler said he’d gotten so much done that he’s considering sequestering himself on a regular basis. “Once a year, park the bus and stay on it!” he laughed.

BK, meanwhile, said he was “super gratified” and raised a toast to “life” just keeping “getting better.”

FGL also said their new album is completely done and “ready to be dropped” — and they think they might be back earlier than you might expect.

The group’s manager, music industry legend Irving Azoff, said on the call, “This thing’s going to end…We’re pretty gung-ho. It wouldn’t surprise to me to see the boys on the road late spring. But by mid-summer, we think we’re going to get our lives back. So everybody kind of stay the course, work together.”

Jimmie Allen celebrates a doo-wop Christmas with Louis York, the Shindellas in “What Does Christmas Mean”

BBR Music Group/Weirdo WorkshopJimmie Allen dropped his first-ever holiday release today, and it’s a fun, doo-wop tune called “What Does Christmas Mean.”

The duet finds Jimmie joining forces with songwriting and production duo Louis York as well as Nashville-based trio the Shindellas to create a sparkling toast to throwback Christmas magic. The festive track includes a horn section, sleigh bells and a lively piano line.

Louis York and the Shindellas first recorded this track for their 2017 EP Masterpiece Theater: Act III. With extra country flair from Jimmie, they re-imagined the tune for a new release in 2020.

For the “Best Shot” star, recording the song was a win-win: Not only did he get to celebrate the holidays, but he got to do it with two acts he admires.  “I am a huge fan of Louis York and the Shindellas. I love what they have to say musically. And I am a big, big fan of Christmas,” Jimmie explains. “So being on this song with them is super special and fun.”

Before he gets to Christmas, however, Jimmie’s got Thanksgiving plans: He’s performing with Noah Cyrus during the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
