Retired NYPD chief sues department over alleged 'glass ceiling' for female officers

(NEW YORK) — A “glass ceiling” keeps women from climbing to the highest ranks of the nation’s largest police force, a retired New York Police Department chief alleged Monday in a new lawsuit.

Lori Pollock, the department’s first female chief of Crime Control Strategies, contends she was forced into retirement last week after 33 years of service due to “intolerable, difficult and unpleasant” working conditions that prevent women from advancing to “the most prestigious executive positions within the NYPD.”

Pollock, one of five women to achieve the rank of three-star chief in the department’s 175-year history, contends that NYPD Police Commissioner Dermot Shea mocked her and made her feel unwelcome during internal meetings.

“Shea deliberately implemented, condoned, sanctioned and ratified a glass ceiling policy and practice within the NYPD,” the suit says.

During a November 2019 meeting when Pollock gave a presentation to Shea, who had recently been promoted to commissioner, the suit claims he was distracted by his phone. Pollock told the commissioner at the meeting that she had interest in the chief of detectives position, which Shea had vacated when he got his promotion.

On Dec. 9, the department unveiled a new Bureau of Community Partnerships that was going to be led by Chauncey Parker, a civilian, with Pollock serving as a subordinate, the suit said. The suit contends that Pollock was never included in any of the discussions about the new bureau or her role.

“This is a starkly different career trajectory for Pollock as compared to her male predecessors,” the suit says.

Later that day, Shea held a meeting to install the new members of the unit and over 30 top NYPD executives attended, according to the suit. In the past Pollock would sit three seats removed from the commissioner, but due to her reassignment she was placed at the other end of the table, the suit said.

“During the meeting, and in front of the entire executive staff, Shea shouted to Pollock and stated: ‘Hey Lori how do you like it at the other end of the table?'” the suit said.

Pollock said she tried to meet with Shea to talk about her reassignment but he could not find time, and in March, she requested to resign from the force, the suit said. The commissioner said he wouldn’t accept her resignation and conceded, “Structurally her transfer was wrong,” according to the suit.

Over the next couple of months, Shea promoted several men to high-ranking positions without affording women the opportunity to interview for them, the suit contends. Pollock resigned on Aug. 6, “finding she had no alternative because it was more than clear to her that she could not advance her career,” the suit said.

A spokeswoman for the NYPD told ABC News that the department will review the suit when it is served.

“The contributions of women, both in leadership roles and in their representation in the uniformed and civilian ranks, across the Police Department, cannot be overestimated,” the spokeswoman said in a statement.

The suit contends Shea violated New York’s laws against gender discrimination and seeks compensatory damages that will be determined at a future date.

Kelly Clarkson announces she's filling in for Simon Cowell on 'America's Got Talent'

No Comments Entertainment News

Disney Channel/Image Group LA(LOS ANGELES) — As Simon Cowell nurses a broken back, he can rest easy knowing that the empty chair he leaves behind on America’s Got Talent is in great hands.

Kelly Clarkson announced Monday that she will step in for Cowell while he recuperates by serving as a guest judge this Tuesday and Wednesday.

“URGENT MEMO…. from yours truly,” Clarkson alerted her 12.2 million followers on Twitter and posted the official announcement that she entitled “Some Changes…”

“My friend, Simon Cowell, is doing better now but was in an accident and won’t be able to make Tuesday and Wednesday’s live shows for AGT,” her statement reads. “But no worries America, someone far wiser, cooler, and hotter is taking his seat!  The unbelievably amazing Kelly Clarkson.”

“You’re welcome in advance,” Clarkson snarkily concluded.

This isn’t Clarkson’s first rodeo in the judge’s chair as she’s been discovering musical talent since 2018 on NBC’s sister reality competition series The Voice

In addition, she has several years of hosting duty experience under her belt thanks to her Emmy Award-winning daytime talk show The Kelly Clarkson Show — in addition to hosting the Billboard Music Awards for the past three consecutive years.

You can catch Clarkson, alongside fellow judges Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum and Sofia Vergara — plus host Terry Crews — on America’s Got Talent airing live this Tuesday and Wednesday starting at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.

As previously reported, Cowell broke his back in several places after crashing his e-bike on Sunday.  The media mogul remained in good humor over his injury, as he tweeted shortly after coming out of surgery, “Some good advice… If you buy an electric trail bike, read the manual before you ride it for the first time.”

It has not been announced when Cowell will return to the show.

Chris Janson earns his first multi-week number one, thanks to his wife and George Strait

No Comments Country Music News

ABC/Image Group LAChris Janson extends his run at the top of the chart, as “Done” spends its second week at number one on Billboard‘s Country Airplay ranking.

The Missouri native’s latest hit was inspired by his wife, who also stars alongside him in the song’s music video.

“It’s a love song about Kelly, and I think it’s quite possibly maybe the best song I’ve ever written,” Chris tells ABC Audio. “It’s my favorite that I’ve ever had. It’s just about her, man.”

More specifically, “Done” sums up Chris’s reaction the first time he met the woman who would be his wife.

“First time I saw her,” he recalls, “I said the words. I said ‘Done and done. I’m gonna marry her and that’s it.’ So naturally, we wrote a song called ‘Done,’ you know.”

“I just write real stuff about real life,” he continues. “And when it came to be on the album, man, that was one of the easiest first picks right out of the shoot, you know.”

“And I wanted it to kinda sound like mid-nineties, George Strait, four-week number one type song,” he adds. “So that’s how I produced it.”

“Done” is Chris’s fourth number one overall, though it’s his first to top the chart for multiple weeks. It follows his breakthrough hit, “Buy Me a Boat,” “Fix a Drink,” and “Good Vibes.”

Zoë Kravitz calls out Hulu for its lack of diverse shows following 'High Fidelity' cancellation

No Comments Entertainment News

Phillip Caruso/Hulu(LOS ANGELES) — Zoë Kravitz has a major bone to pick with Hulu after it cancelled her critically-acclaimed series High Fidelity after one season.

In her most recent Instagram post, which showed a behind-the-scenes image of her with the cast, Zoë thanked her High Fidelity co-stars and fans for their love and support during the series, adding that “#breakupssuck.”

But soon after her post, Kravitz apparently had more thoughts on the cancellation, telling fellow actress Tessa Thompson, in the now-deleted comments section, that Hulu is definitely lacking in diverse shows.

“It’s cool,” Kravitz responded to Thompson, who initially commented “I will miss you alllllllllllll so much.”

“At least Hulu has a ton of other shows starring women of color we can watch,” Zoe continued, before writing, “Oh wait.”

The series, which is a modern reimagining of the 2000 film starring John Cusack, starred Kravitz as Rob, a “pop culture-obsessed” owner of a record store. It also starred Jake Lacy, Da’Vine Joy Randolph and David H. Holmes.

In an interview with Variety‘s Big Ticket podcast, Kravitz had shared her excitement about the role and the opportunity to shine light on an underrepresented group of people.

“The amount of comments, DMs, things on Twitter, articles written about Brown women who love music, were afraid of commitment, who’ve never seen a person like them on television — they feel seen for the first time,” she said.

“Just breaking away from the stereotypes, I feel like people need that. So I feel very lucky to have been able to deliver that, because one of the most important things for me was authenticity and bringing a real world to life.”
