Eric Church on Morgan Wallen’s racial slur scandal: “I was heartbroken when it happened”

No Comments Country Music News

ABCOver the past couple of years, Morgan Wallen has been vocal about what a musical hero Eric Church is to him, even cutting “Quittin’ Time” — which Eric co-wrote — on his January release, Dangerous: The Double Album.

But in early February, video footage surfaced of Morgan at the end of a night of partying, hurling slurs such as the N-word as he said goodnight to a car full of friends.

In the following hours, Morgan’s promising arc toward country music superstardom came screeching to a halt. His record label suspended his contract, and his music was removed from a variety of radio networks and streaming services.

In his recent Billboard cover feature, Eric admitted how troubled he was by the younger singer’s actions.

“That was indefensible. I was heartbroken when it happened,” the “Hell of a View” star explained. “I think Morgan’s trying to work on that and on himself. And I hope he does.”

In an apology video uploaded to social media after the incident, Morgan offered some of the ways in which he’s trying to better himself. He revealed that he’d accepted invitations from Black organizations to educate himself and engage in honest conversation, and also noted that the video was filmed at the end of a 72-hour bender. At the time that he posted his apology, Morgan said, he had been sober for nine days.

While Eric was firm in speaking out against Morgan’s actions, he has empathy for the singer, too. He sent a note telling Morgan to keep “hanging in there,” adding that he’s been praying for him.

The long-anticipated reunion of Meloni’s Elliot Stabler and his former partner, Mariska Hargitay’s Olivia Benson attracted an average live — meaning not on DVR — audience of 7.6 million, according to Nielsen numbers quoted by Variety

The viewership was nearly double the usual audience for SVU. The crossover began during SVU’s 9 p.m. time slot, then led into the 10 p.m. hour with L&O: OC

Meloni left the series in 2011 after walking the SVU beat for 12 seasons. According to Thursday night’s episodes, his Elliot Stabler up and left without a word to Benson, and moved with his family to Italy, where he was working as a liaison between the NYPD and Italian cops.

Stabler’s return to New York City, which was a surprise to Liv, was meant to be for a vacation with his family while he secretly worked connections to an overseas organized crime case. But his world was turned upside down when his wife was killed in Manhattan by a car bomb meant for him.

Stabler decides to make his stay permanent, and helps to set up an organized crime task force so that he can nab the crime boss who got his wife killed.

“Girl Go”: Chrissy Metz chases freedom in her autobiographical, empowering new song

No Comments Country Music News

UMG NashvilleThis Is Us star and rising country artist Chrissy Metz returns this week with her next song, “Girl Go,” a windows-down anthem for taking risks and pursuing dreams.

Chrissy co-wrote the song with Dan Fernandez as well as two more bona fide risk-taking country singer-songwriters, Faren Rachels and Lainey Wilson. It’s the latest selection from Chrissy’s writing and recording period in Nashville, which took place over the course of last year.

The singer says that the new song speaks to her own experience of growing up and deciding to try her luck in Hollywood.

“‘Girl Go’ was inspired by the beginning of my journey from Gainesville, Florida to Los Angeles and just needing somebody to believe in me and say, ‘Go — go and do it, be bold, be brave, be courageous,’” Chrissy recounts. “I remember being that bright-eyed, very eager, excited girl to pursue her dreams and this really encapsulates that moment.”

Now Chrissy is busily pursuing her dreams of country music stardom, as well as her acting. Last summer, she made her Grand Ole Opry debut, and she’s currently at work on her first full-length project.

Maren Morris says motherhood is changing her songwriting as she heads into her third album

No Comments Country Music News

ABCIn the past year, Maren Morris not only weathered the pandemic, scored hits and won awards, but she became a first-time mom to son Hayes, who just turned one. Of course, being a mother has meant lots of changes for “The Bones” singer, but she thinks it’s also had a big impact on her artistry.

Referring to herself and husband Ryan Hurd, Maren says, “We had Hayes right at the beginning of the pandemic, and we had no context. It was our first time being parents. But I feel like it’s changed me in so many ways. I feel like I write songs differently now because of him.”

“I dunno, it just gives you this other layer of life that so many people go through as parents,” she adds. “But as a writer, it kind of feels like you enter into this club. You’re like, ‘Oh, wow, there’s other people that did this! And also, multiple times!’ Like, that still blows my mind!”

“But we are really, really blessed,” Maren gushes. “And he’s such a happy little boy. And, yeah, we’re really lucky to have him.”

Maybe that’s why Maren wrote on social media that her third album, which she’s halfway done with, is “probably the happiest thing I’ve ever made.”

Baby Hayes also appears in the video for Maren’s “Better Than We Found It,” which is up for Music Video of the Year at next month’s ACM Awards.
