Johnny Depp attends final day of court in libel trial; lawyer calls Amber Heard's abuse claims "fictionalized"

No Comments Entertainment News

ABC/Randy Holmes(LOS ANGELES) — While he was absent for Monday’s proceedings in a London courtroom, Johnny Depp was greeted by a throng of fans, some holding “Justice for Johnny” signs, when he arrived Tuesday for the last day of his libel trial.

Depp is suing the U.K. company News Group Newspapers for a 2018 story in one of its publications, The Sun, that branded him a “wife beater” during his rocky marriage to Aquaman actress Amber Heard — something the actor has repeatedly denied.

Throughout the case, both parties had leveled abuse claims against the other.  Heard showed bruises purportedly caused by the actor, while Depp insists it was Heard who got physical with him, punching him repeatedly and at one point cutting off the tip of his finger with a thrown vodka bottle.

In court Tuesday, Page Six reports Depp’s attorney David Sherborne said Heard was a, “complex individual with a complex history,” who kept adding so many accusations during the trial that it was “hard to keep up.”

He claims Heard spun “astonishingly self-serving and fictionalized accounts” of her relationship with the former Pirates of the Carribbean star, including “a secret feelings book that reads more like a novella than anything which matches reality.”

Sherborne repeated his 57-year-old client’s innocence against the “reputation-destroying, career-ending allegation” published by the paper.

'Dancing With the Stars' to resume production later this summer

No Comments Entertainment News

ABC/Eric McCandless(LOS ANGELES) — Good news, fans: Dancing with the Stars will be coming back for its 29th season later this summer and will be making the necessary changes to make sure that all involved can safely produce the show in light of COVID-19.

Entertainment Tonight confirms that cameras are slated to start rolling in September, but admits that there is still a possibility the date could be delayed in light of the ongoing pandemic.

It is unknown how DWTS will operate under the new health and safety regulations, as it’s among the first reality competition series to resume semi-normal production.  Other competition shows like American Idol and The Voice opted for socially distanced models where competitors performed from the comfort and safety of their homes.

While it is expected that DWTS will operate without an audience, much like professional sports, other changes are sure to shake up the long-running dance competition.

Fans are already expecting a dramatically different experience after original host Tom Bergeron announced earlier this month that he was leaving the show, alongside his co-host of a decade Erin Andrews.

America’s Next Top Model alum Tyra Banks will be taking over their hosting duties for season 29 and will also operate as the show’s executive producer.

In addition, fan favorite dance pros Witney Carson and Lindsay Arnold will most likely be sitting this season out as they are both expecting children this winter.

And while the world has yet to learn who will be competing for this year’s Mirrorball Trophy, it was previously announced that Bachelorette star Kaitlyn Bristowe will be putting on her dancing shoes this year.

So far, she’s the only candidate to announce they’ll be part of DWTS‘s upcoming season.

WarnerMedia launches investigation into The Ellen DeGeneres Show following allegations of misconduct

Randy Holmes/Walt Disney Television via Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) — WarnerMedia will be launching an investigation into The Ellen DeGeneres Show following a Buzzfeed report that contained statements from staffers that allegedly exposed ongoing misconduct and racial prejudice on set.

Staffers claimed the show bred a toxic work environment and fostered a “culture of fear.”

The Hollywood Reporter says sources confirmed the newly launched investigation despite no official word from Warner Bros. or Telepictures.

The Buzzfeed report was comprised of several accounts from former and current staffers, who recounted being on the receiving end of microaggressions to full blown retaliation.

Employees claimed that they were retaliated against by senior producers and other higher-ranking staffers when seeking sick days or time off to attend funerals, along with being on the receiving end of racist insults and unequal treatment compared to their white counterparts.

Some employees alleged that, in conjunction to racism behind the scenes, there were cases of unfair termination and other consequences for sounding off against the abuse they allegedly endured on the job.

Shortly after the Buzzfeed article was published, Ellen executive producers Ed Glavin, Mary Connelly and Andy Lassner issued a joint statement that claimed, “Over the course of nearly two decades, 3,000 episodes, and employing over 1,000 staff members, we have strived to create an open, safe, and inclusive work environment. We are truly heartbroken and sorry to learn that even one person in our production family has had a negative experience. It’s not who we are and not who we strive to be, and not the mission Ellen has set for us.”

The Ellen DeGeneres Show first went on the air in 2003 and was nominated for Emmy awards throughout its 17-season run — of which it won 61.

It’s estimated that 2.5 million viewers tune in every day to watch the daytime talk show.
