'Lion King' follow-up movie to be directed by Barry Jenkins

No Comments Entertainment News

Tim P. Whitby/Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) — A new Lion King film is in the works, Disney sources have confirmed to Good Morning America.

The sources added that Barry Jenkins, who won a best picture Oscar in 2018 for Moonlight, is set to direct the project.

“Helping my sister raise two young boys during the ’90s, I grew up with these characters,” Jenkins said in a statement to Deadline. “Having the opportunity to work with Disney on expanding this magnificent tale of friendship, love and legacy while furthering my work chronicling the lives and souls of folk within the African diaspora is a dream come true.”

The original Lion King animated film, which premiered in 1994, grossed $968.5 million worldwide to become the 51st highest grossing movie of all time, according to Box Office Mojo. The Jon Favreau-directed live action Lion King, which debuted last year, earned $1.65 billion worldwide and is currently ranked #7 on Box Office Mojo’s list.

Jeff Nathanson, who wrote the Favreau-directed film, has reportedly finished an initial draft of the follow-up movie. According to Deadline, the story is likely to explore “the mythology of the characters, including Mufasa’s origin story.”

“Moving the story forward while looking back conjures memories of The Godfather: Part II, set on the African plain with a continuation of the tradition of music that was a key part of the 1994 animated classic, the 2019 film and the blockbuster Broadway stage transfer,” the publication reported.

No release date for the new film has been announced.

Ilyasah Shabazz says 'The Godfather of Harlem' is "great," but didn't show the "depth" of her father Malcolm X

No Comments Entertainment News

Courtesy of Ilyasah Shabazz(NEW YORK) — Malcolm X’s daughter Ilyasah Shabazz is sharing her thoughts on the Forest Whitaker-led crime drama Godfather of Harlem.

In the series, Whitaker plays Bumpy Johnson, a Harlem crime boss who finds his neighborhood ruled by the Italian mob when he returns from a 10 year bid. During his battle to regain control, Johnson forms an alliance with a young influential preacher named Malcolm X. Shabazz tells ABC Audio that although she enjoyed the popular Epix series, she had some major issues with it.

“It was a great series, but it’s on historical characters,” she says. “And so the historical character portrayed of my father is not really accurate, nor is the portrayal of Adam Clayton Powell. And so it’s just important to understand their significant contribution.”

“My father wasn’t only trying to get converts. My father was empowering people,” Shabazz continues. “He was speaking power into their souls and into their ear. And there’s a big difference in that.”

While the series is an obvious dramatization of Bumpy Johnson’s life, the two men did have a real-life friendship that dated back to the 1940s when X used to be known as a street hustler named “Detroit Red.” Shabazz says she would have loved to have seen her father in a more authentic light and not just as a one-dimensional character.

“And so while it is a great series, I think it is important to give the depth,” she says. “To show the depth of these gentlemen, these historians, these past leaders.”

A release date for the second season of Godfather of Harlem has yet to be announced.

Shannen Doherty on her battle with stage 4 breast cancer: "I've got a lot of life in me"

No Comments Entertainment News

LISA O’CONNOR/AFP via Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) — Shannen Doherty says she’s remaining positive during her ongoing fight with stage 4 breast cancer, despite a recent disappointing development.

The 49-year-old actress, who publicly revealed in a interview with Good Morning America last February that her breast cancer had returned.  Doherty said she went to get a PET scan in early 2019 due to extreme back pain she was experiencing after exercising. Her oncologist, Dr. Lawrence Piro, then told her the breast cancer had not only returned, but had spread to her spine. She revealed her metastatic cancer to a few close friends at a very intimate dinner with Piro present.

In a new interview with ELLE, Doherty says being diagnosed has shaped the way she approaches life.

“I try to treasure all the small moments that most people don’t really see or take for granted,” she said. “The small things are magnified for me. We have this endless well within us, and it’s just about continuing to dig in that well for the strength to face adversity — and so that we can also see all the beauty.”

“I feel like I’m a very, very healthy human being,” she added. “It’s hard to wrap up your affairs when you feel like you’re going to live another 10 or 15 years. It’s like anybody with Stage IV faces this sort of thing, where others want to put you out to pasture. I’m not ready for pasture. I’ve got a lot of life in me.”

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Doherty and her husband, Kurt Iswarienko, have returned to quarantine at their Malibu home, which they left due to damages after the Woolsey Fire in 2018.

The October issue of Elle hits newsstands Oct. 6.
