David E. Talbert on 'Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey' featuring diverse cast: "We're all magical"

No Comments Entertainment News

Courtesy of Netflix(LOS ANGELES) — When David E. Talbert was younger, he — like most Americans — watched Christmas movies with his family.  However, one thing was absent from those films celebrating the magic of Christmas… people that looked like him.

That discovery led to him writing and directing Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey.  The film, available now on Netflix, is led by cast that’s completely made up of people of color.

Talbert told ABC Audio that he brought up his childhood experience when pitching his movie to the streaming giant.

“I said, ‘But the holiday movie you have all white people falling in love or or being whimsy and wonderful. And that’s a beautiful thing,'” he recounted. “‘But you don’t have black people and people of color love the holidays just like everybody else. And what do we have to sit down with and watch every year?'”

The answer, he says, was “nothing.”

Talbert adds that making more holiday films — or movies in general — starring families of color is long overdue.  That realization hit the 54-year-old hard when he tried to share his favorite childhood movie, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, with his son.

Instead of having a father-son bonding movement, his son, Elias, lost interest because “there was no representation of himself on screen.”  That inspired Talbert to take a closer look at what his son DID like.

Elias loved the animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse because, as Talbert says, the movie’s lead, “Miles [Morales] looks like him, haircut’s like him [and has] swag like him.”

That’s why hopes that by watching Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey, people realize a couple of very important things.

“We’re all magical. That the world is an inclusive place,” he expressed. “We all have a seat at the table of Wonder and Magic.”

'The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air' cast reunion special gets trailer, premiere date

No Comments Entertainment News

Chris Haston/NBCU Photo Bank/NBCUniversal via Getty Images/NBCUniversal via Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) — Will Smith took to social media Friday to reveal that The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reunion special will air on HBO Max on Thursday, November 19. The artist formerly known as The Fresh Prince also gave fans a look at what to expect from when the cast got together again, in the form of a trailer.

“These are the people who made me the man I am today,” Smith, 51, posted.

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, which ran for six seasons from 1990-1996, featured Smith playing a fictionalized version of himself named Will, a teen from West Philadelphia sent to live in a Bel-Air mansion with his rich Uncle Phil, played by James Avery, and Aunt Viv — first played by Janet Hubert and later by Daphne Maxwell Reid.  With them was their butler, Geoffrey, played by Joseph Marcell, and their three children — Hilary, Carlton and Ashley, played by Karyn ParsonsAlfonso Ribeiro and Tatyana Ali, respectively.

“Nobody ever asked me if I could act,” Smith says in the trailer. To laughs, Ribeiro fires back, “And you couldn’t.”

Everyone is accounted for in the trailer except for Avery, who died in 2013 at the age of 68. Joining the main cast is DJ Jazzy Jeff, who played Will’s friend, Jazz, on the show.

The trailer, recorded mostly on the show’s mansion set, ends with Smith revealing that he felt it important for Hubert, who played Aunt Viv from seasons one through three before Reid took over for seasons 4 through 6, be included in the reunion. The two have famously been at odds since Hubert’s departure from the show.

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reunion special was filmed on September 10, exactly 30 years after the series originally premiered in 1990.

Ellen Pompeo says shocking 'Grey's Anatomy' premiere surprise was a "no brainer"

No Comments Entertainment News

ABC/Mike Rosenthal(LOS ANGELES) — (NOTE: SPOILERS FOR “GREY’S ANATOMY” SEASON PREMIERE) Grey’s Anatomy fans got more than they could have ever expected in the season 17 premiere: a MerDer reunion.

At the end of the two-part premiere — a crossover event with spin-off Station 19 — producer and star Ellen Pompeo’s Meredith Grey came face-to-face with her late husband, Derek Shepherd, played by Patrick Dempsey, on a picturesque beach. Too scene took place after Meredith was found on the ground in the Grey Sloan parking lot.

The jaw-dropping, top secret moment, according to Pompeo, was a “no-brainer” because he was “one of the most important people in Meredith’s life.”

“What could we give our audience that would make every single audience member just so incredibly happy?” she told ABC’s Good Morning America on Friday. “And that, clearly, was bringing Patrick Dempsey back on the show.”

Pompeo said she reached out to Dempsey, whose character died at the end of season 11, to discuss the return of his beloved “McDreamy” character. He agreed, she said, when they realized they had “the opportunity to bring a smile to people’s faces during 2020.”

As an homage to all the health care heroes fighting on the front lines against COVID-19, this season of Grey’s Anatomy has been dedicated to them.

One scene from the season 17 premiere even showed Pompeo’s character emotionally breaking down.

“My job is to portray the human side of these doctors,” she explained. “Can you imagine going to work every day and having to walk straight into a contaminated COVID ward? I mean, most people wouldn’t do it.”

Filming this season meant Pompeo and her co-stars have had to undergo various protocols to keep everyone safe, like testing and keeping their distance.

“We [normally] …play music, we dance, we play jokes on each other,” she recalled of the pre-COVID days. “And all of that is kind of gone now.”

Kiss my Plexiglas: How are producers safely shooting smooches during the pandemic

No Comments Entertainment News

iStock/doble-d(LOS ANGELES) — A kiss can’t be just a kiss during the COVID-19 pandemic — such is the reality movie and TV producers are facing in shooting smooching scenes.

No soap opera would be complete without steamy scenes, but having to abide by coronavirus protocols to keep their cast safe led CBS’ The Bold and the Beautiful to think out of the box — literally, in some cases.

In some cases: the show has turned to what producers told Inside Edition were “mannequins” — but one shown standing in for a patient in a hospital bed looked more like a realistic-looking silicone-skinned sex doll.

B&B‘s producers have also hired living stunt smoochers: the real-life spouses of the show’s stars. Recently, Denise Richards’ husband Aaron acted as a designated kisser for one scene with her. And when the script called for Lawrence Saint-Victor to kiss his co-star Kiara Barnes, his wife Shay acted as his “intimacy double.” She donned a wig and was shot from the back of her head to sell the illusion.

“The kiss was easy,” Saint-Victor joked to the entertainment news program. “Everything before the kiss was difficult.”

Meanwhile, Lifetime has come up with a transparent solution to the kissing question: Plexiglas.

For a key kiss between stars Ali Stroker and Daniel di Tomasso in the upcoming holiday film Christmas Ever After, Lifetime producers showed The Wrap that a piece of the plastic was wedged between the couple while they snogged, insisting it won’t be visible to audiences when the movie debuts December 6.
