Judge rejects Mossimo Giannulli's bid for early release

Giannulli, 57, began serving his five-month prison sentence at the Federal Correctional Institution, Lompoc, in Southern California in November.

Entertainment Tonight reports that a judge rejected the fashion designer’s request, but left the door open for him to file a renewed motion or a prison warden to intervene if “extenuating circumstances occur in the future.”

The court documents, obtained by ET, state Giannulli served 56 days in solitary quarantine when he filed his request to the judge. His lawyers had argued the conditions of his sentence were “far more extreme than what the court recommended,” adding he was confined to a small cell 24/7 and only granted three 20 minute breaks a day.

His team had hoped he was eligible for release due to COVID-19 regulations that allow certain prisoners to be released to home confinement to help reduce California’s prison population.

Giannulli’s legal team hoped his age and that he is non-violent offender who has no prior criminal record would make him a prime candidate.

His prison sentence is set to expire April 17. Giannulli will also have to pay a quarter-million dollar fine and satisfy 250 hours of community service, on top of undergoing two years supervised release.

As previously reported, Giannulli and wife Lori Laughlin pleaded guilty on May 22 of last year to playing a role in the Varsity Blues college admissions cheating scheme by paying $500,000 to get their two daughters into the University of Southern California as crew recruits when neither child participated in the sport.

Both sentenced to prison on conspiracy charges.  Loughlin already satisfied her sentence and was released on December 28.

'Lovecraft Country' creator Misha Green to make her directorial debut with 'Tomb Raider' sequel

Manny Carabel/Getty Images–© 2017 WARNER BROS. ENTERTAINMENT INC. AND METRO-GOLDWYN-MAYER PICTURES INC./Graham Bartholomew(LOS ANGELES) — Lovecraft Country creator Misha Green has set her directorial debut.

According to Deadline, Green will direct and write the upcoming sequel to Tomb Raider. Based on the Sony PlayStation video game, the new action film will once again star Oscar winner Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft.

Croft was first played by Angelina Jolie in 2001’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and its sequel Lara Croft: Tomb Raider — The Cradle of Life. However, Vikander took over the role in the 2018 remake of the film, which was timed for a successful reboot of the game.

This is the latest project for Green, who is the driving force behind Lovecraft Country, the breakout HBO series that stars Jurnee Smollett, Jonathan Majors and Michael Kenneth Williams.

Prior to that, Green co-created, executive-produced and wrote the WGN series Underground, which was one of the first scripted U.S. TV shows that focused on slavery and the Underground Railroad.

Last year, Page declared that their name was Elliot, and they were trans. The announcement was met with support from friends both famous and not, including Portner, who said in part, “Elliot’s existence is a gift in and of itself. Shine on sweet E. Love you so much, Elliot.”

John David Washington talks following in the footsteps of his Oscar-winning dad, Denzel Washington

No Comments Entertainment News

Allen Berezovsky/Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) — Before John David Washington, his father, Denzel Washington, rightfully held the title as Hollywood’s leading man.

The former athlete tells The Wall Street Journal he always wanted to follow in the footsteps of his two-time Oscar-winning dad, even if he couldn’t admit it.

“I always wanted to do what he did, always wanted to be an artist,” says John David. “I jumped in and hid in this football persona, this athlete, literally putting on a helmet to hide my face, hide my identity.”

While attending Morehouse College as a football star, Washington suffered a leg injury in 2013, which prevented him from pursing a professional football career. A year later, he auditioned and landed for a role as NFL wide receiver Ricky Jerret on the HBO series, Ballers, which he secretly held back from his father.

“I just wanted to prove to myself that I could do it,” John David continues. “I’ll never forget how he expressed how proud he was of me. That was a great moment for me.”

Following 2018’s BlacKkKlansman, John David starred in 2020’s Tenet, which earned over $363 million worldwide, even during the pandemic.

Washington recalls entering a “dramatic” place for his next role in the upcoming film, Malcolm & Marie, alongside Zendaya. Shot under strict COVID-19 safety protocols last June, the film follows Washington and Zendaya as a not-so-perfect couple who return home after a movie premiere. As he eagerly awaits what the critics have to say, the two are left in their house alone, to discuss their relationship.

“I went from the biggest-budget film in my career [Tenet] to the lowest-budget film within a six-month time frame,” he adds. “I was like, ‘this is survival,’ but hey, if this is the last thing I get to do, I truly believe in it.”

Malcolm & Marie premieres on Netflix February 5.

Watch now: Action and joke-packed trailer for Disney's animated 'Raya and the Last Dragon'

No Comments Entertainment News

Walt Disney Animation Studios(LOS ANGELES) — On Tuesday, Disney released the latest trailer to its upcoming animated adventure Raya and the Last Dragon

The film is set in the fictional land of Kumandra, 500 years after an evil force threatened the land and forced the dragons, who lived peacefully with humans, to sacrifice themselves in order to salvage humanity. A young warrior named Raya must find the last dragon to unify the people of Kumandra, before the forces of evil can locate it.

Kelly Marie Tran, who played Rose Tico in Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, is the voice behind Raya, while comedian and actress Awkwafina voices Sisu, the last dragon.

The new trailer ups the ante in both the action and the antics. Not only is Raya tricked by a “con baby,” whose thieving skills lead the young warrior to recruit it to her cause, but she also takes on an enemy army seemingly single-handedly.

Crazy Rich Asians scene stealer Awkwafina unsurprisingly gets many of the laughs, equating her dragon abilities to that kid “in a group project who didn’t pitch in as much, but you all get the same grade.”

Raya and the Last Dragon predominantly features Asian performers.  Apart from Tran and Awkwafina, Daniel Dae Kim, producer and star of The Good Doctor plays Chief Benja; Emmy winner Sandra Oh voices Raya’s nemesis Virana, and Benedict Wong of Marvel movie fame, plays the hulking, wise-cracking warrior Tong.

Raya and the Last Dragon will be released in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access — for a premium price of $29.99, same as Mulan‘s early release — on March 5th.
