Larry Flynt, 'Hustler' magazine founder, dies at 78

Albert L. Ortega/Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) — Larry Flynt, the controversial founder of Hustler magazine, died on Wednesday in Los Angeles following “the recent onset of a sudden illness,” the magazine has confirmed. He was 78.

The mogul, a notable figure in the porn industry for nearly 50 years, “passed quietly in his sleep at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center with his wife Liz and daughter Theresa by his side,” according to the statement.

Flynt, a ninth grade dropout, launched his raunchy magazine in 1974, which led to a $400 million empire that included other publications, strip clubs, “adult” shops and several television channels known as Hustler TV.

A self-described First Amendment champion, Flynt was involved in a number of legal battles involving free speech and pornography regulations.

While leaving a 1978 court a hearing in Georgia, he was shot by a gunman, later revealed to be serial killer Joseph Paul Franklin.  The shooting left Flynt partially paralyzed from the waist down.  Following the incident, Flynt used a gold-plated, velvet-lined wheelchair.

Flynt was famously sued by televangelist Rev. Jerry Falwell in a case that made it all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.  It inspired the 1996 Oscar-nominated biopic, The People vs. Larry Flynt, in which he was portrayed by Woody Harrelson.

Flynt also dabbled in politics with a brief presidential campaign in 1984, and a run for Governor of California in a 2003 recall election.

Shia LaBeouf denies FKA Twigs allegations of abuse

No Comments Entertainment News

Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic(LOS ANGELES) — Shia LaBeouf is denying all allegations of abuse lodged against him by his ex, FKA Twigs.

The stance comes two months after Twigs, born Tahliah Barnett, sued the 34-year-old actor claiming he “tormented” her, brandished a firearm while driving, and “knowingly” gave her an STD, among other accusations of similarly violent and controlling behavior during their relationship.

In response to the lawsuit, the Disturbia star’s legal team, as published by People, state that he “denies, generally and specifically, each and every allegation contained in [Barnett]’s Complaint, denies that [Barnett] has sustained any injury or loss by reason of any act or omission on the part of [LaBeouf], and denies that [Barnett] is entitled to any relief or damages whatsoever.”

In addition to denying all claims, LaBeouf is requesting that Twigs cover his legal costs and “further relief as the Court may deem just and proper.”

The news comes just after LaBeouf reportedly ended his working relationship with talent agency CAA as he takes a hiatus from acting to focus on his mental health.

'Buffy' and 'Angel' star Charisma Carpenter blasts creator Joss Whedon's "abuse"; co-stars come to her support

Michael Tullberg/Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) — Charisma Carpenter has written a lengthy Twitter post in which she extensively details the “abuse” she says she suffered under creator Joss Whedon while working on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spin-off, Angel.

And since the post has gone viral, several of her co-stars, including Buffy lead Sarah Michelle Gellar, have voiced their support.

With the hashtag #ISupportRayFisher, Carpenter explains the Cyborg actor’s complaints of a hostile work environment under Whedon while he was re-shooting Zack Snyder’s Justice League led to her speaking out.

Fisher’s claims “gutted me,” Carpenter admitted.

She said, “Joss has a history of being casually cruel,” alleging that he “abused his power on numerous occasions…While he found his misconduct amusing, it only served to…disempower me, and alienate me from my peers.”

Carpenter declared, “The disturbing incidents triggered a chronic physical condition from which I still suffer,” and added, “I coped in isolation and, at times, destructively.”

The actress claims Whedon called her “fat” when she was four months pregnant and “mocked my religious beliefs,” asking “if I was going to keep it,” meaning the baby.

Carpenter also claims she was forced to work late hours against her doctor’s advice as a “retaliatory” measure, even as she began suffering Braxton Hicks contractions, and that she was “unceremoniously fired” the season after she gave birth.

In response, Gellar posted on Instagram, “While I am proud to have my name associated with Buffy Summers, I don’t want to be forever associated with the name Joss Whedon.” Gellar said she stands with “survivors of abuse,” and is “proud of them for speaking out.”

Michelle Trachtenberg, who played Buffy’s little sister, Dawn, commented, “I am brave enough now…To repost this. Because. This must. Be known. As a teenager. With his not appropriate behavior.” The actress added, “What he did was very bad. But we win. By surviving!”

Amber Benson, who played Tara, also praised Carpenter’s message. She tweeted that Buffy was a “toxic environment” and that “starts from the top.” She also said, “There was a lot of damage done during that time and many of us are still processing it twenty plus years later.”

Whedon did not respond to ABC Audio’s request for comment.

'Tough As Nails' returns tonight for season two, hailing everyday heroes of the pandemic

No Comments Entertainment News

CBS ©2021 CBS Broadcasting, Inc. All Rights Reserved(NEW YORK) — Multiple Emmy-winning Amazing Race host Phil Keoghan  tells ABC Audio he’s “thrilled” to return to CBS tonight with a second season of his reality show, Tough as Nails

The series salutes everyday heroes by having them compete in a series of real-world physical, mental and skills challenges.

Keoghan tells ABC Audio that they shot the show last season before the pandemic, but this season, which shot under strict COVID-19 protocols, is the perfect time to celebrate these 12 new contestants.

“They are the people that keep the country running,” he noted.

“Part of our casting includes a travel nurse,” Phil says of Aracelis “Celi” Garcia. “She’s worked in COVID units and she’s been there for patients who haven’t been able to have their family as they’ve passed. And she’s…literally held the hand of someone who has passed away. So she’s mentally very, very tough. And so that’s an important story for us to tell.”

There’s also UPS driver Patrick “Freight Train” Hargan — “lots of great names this season” Koeghan laughs — just one of the dedicated people who’ve been bringing us our packages during the lockdowns.

“I love hearing those stories because they ‘are the people in our neighborhood,’ you know, ‘the people that we meet each day,’ and that’s Freight Train,” Keoghan says, with a nod to the Sesame Street song.

“And then we’ll have a legend like Meryl who flies a U2 plane — a retired colonel who has flown 3,400 hours….Mikey Eyebrows is a bricklayer. Tara who works on a boat up in Alaska. These are people who have amazing life skills, and that’s the celebration of what Tough as Nails is all about.”

Tough as Nails season two launches tonight at 8:00 p.m. Eastern on CBS.
