Backstage at the 54th CMA Awards, country's sense of family shines through, even in a virtual press room

No Comments Country Music News

John Russell/CMAOn camera at Nashville’s Music City Center, country artists were thrilled to be able to be together for a change, even if they were socially-distanced at tables, after rigid testing for COVID-19.

Backstage at the 54th Annual CMA Awards, things were more typically 2020, however, as winners stood against a step-and-repeat, answering virtual questions from a screen full of journalists joining via Zoom.

Somehow, country music’s sense of family and community was still able to filter through. Jimmie Allen accompanied CMA Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award winner Charley Pride, recounting how only four years ago he spent his last hundred dollars to see the legend play the 50th anniversary show.

Male Vocalist and Album of the Year winner Luke Combs was so overjoyed his fellow North Carolinian Eric Church had finally clinched the Entertainer of the Year title, it was almost like he’d forgotten he was nominated himself.

While The Chief bemoaned the fact that his win had to come in what he deems a year of losses, he vowed music would be the thing to ultimately bring us together, bridging social divides and one day making coronavirus a distant memory. After 2020, he promised he’d never again take playing in front of an audience for granted.

Three-time winner Maren Morris expounded on her Female Vocalist acceptance speech that gave recognition to unsung Black artists, saying it’s important to her to use her platform to pave the way for others, just as folks like Miranda Lambert and Keith Urban have done for her.

At night’s end, hosts Reba McEntire and Darius Rucker came back for a review of the evening, with Reba marveling at the number of new artists nominated this year. Both seemed to entertain the idea of returning to host again in 2021.

Lady A pulls out of CMA Awards due to family member's COVID-19 diagnosis

No Comments Country Music News

ABC/Chris HolloLady A is the third artist to pull out of the CMA Awards telecast due to start in minutes on ABC.

On Instagram, the group wrote, “Sadly, one of our immediate family members has just tested positive for COVID-19 this week. So far, the three of us continue to test negative, and out of caution and love for everyone involved with the CMAs, we’ve decided to stay home from the awards tonight.”

“We’re bummed that we won’t be able to perform with Darius Rucker and Thomas Rhett, but luckily Charles already taped his performance with Carly Pearce so you will still be seeing him take the stage!” the group added. “We’ll be cheering on our friends at home like the rest of y’all! Stay safe out there.”

Charles Kelley was set to sing “I Hope You’re Happy Now” with Carly Pearce because her regular duet partner, Lee Brice, had to pull out of the show a few days ago after testing positive for COVID-19.  Then, Florida Georgia Line‘s Tyler Hubbard tested positive, so the duo has also exited the show.

The 54th Annual CMA Awards, hosted by Reba McEntire and Darius Rucker, will air on ABC at 8 p.m. ET.

Brothers Osborne wouldn’t mind losing CMA Vocal Duo of the Year to Maddie & Tae

No Comments Country Music News

CMA/ABCOver the past several years of CMA Awards, the Vocal Duo of the Year category has increasingly become anybody’s game.

Brooks & Dunn had a longstanding lockdown on the trophy between 1992 and 2006, winning every year save for 2000. But more recently, different duos have taken turns holding the title for a couple of years at a time.

That’s true for 2020 nominees Brothers Osborne, who’ve won three times before in the category. This year, they’re going up against Brooks & Dunn as well as Florida Georgia Line and Dan + Shay, two more acts who’ve won in the past, as well as Maddie & Tae.

If the latter duo wins, it’ll be their first-ever Vocal Duo victory. Brothers Osborne band mates TJ and John Osborne agree it would be well-deserved.

“I mean, they just had a big number-one song, and I would love to see them win it,” TJ points out. “Don’t get me wrong, the narcissist in me would love to take it.”

But if the category’s history of sharing the trophy has taught them anything, it’s that country music truly is about supporting each other, he goes on to say.

“It’s cool that we can celebrate each other and have those moments. It doesn’t have to be around us all the time. That’s the thing I love about this community,” TJ notes. “That’s ultimately why it does feel like a big family.”

The 2020 CMAs take place tonight on ABC at 8:00 p.m. ET.

Thomas Rhett’s “Be a Light” performance at the 2020 CMAs will be a full-circle moment

No Comments Country Music News

CMA/ABCFor Thomas Rhett and his “Be a Light” collaborators Reba McEntire, Chris Tomlin and Lady A’s Hillary Scott, tonight’s CMA Awards represents something of a reunion.  That’s because it’ll mark the first time they’ve all been together since they recorded the song, Thomas points out ahead of the show, adding that their performance tonight will be a major full-circle moment.

“Man, it was just so unpredictable, you know? Because I wrote the song last year without 2020 even in my head,” he explains. “We get around to this year and it just felt like a song that needed to be released and felt like a song that a lot of people would be encouraged by.”

In fact, he adds, it’ll be one of his most meaningful performances on the CMAs stage to date.

“I’ve never been more excited to sing a song on this awards show. It’s just one of my favorite songs I got to be a part of,” Thomas continues. “And just seeing the response to the song all over the world has been very encouraging to me.”

“Be a Light” scored Thomas and his musical partners a nomination in the Musical Event of the Year category.  He’s also up for Male Vocalist of the Year.

The 2020 CMA Awards air tonight at 8:00 p.m. ET on ABC.
