Marco weakens as hurricane warning dropped, Laura could become powerful hurricane as it moves into the Gulf

No Comments National News

ABC NewsBy MAX GOLEMBO, ABC News

(NEW YORK) — Marco has weakened even more as of 5 a.m. Monday morning and winds are now down to 60 mph.

Marco is expected to continue weakening and Hurricane Warnings have been discontinued for the Louisiana coast.

Here are all the Watches and Warnings for the region this morning along with new Tropical Storm Warnings that have been issued for Laura in the Florida Keys, including Key West.

As you can see on the path map below, Marco should make landfall somewhere south of Morgan City, Louisiana, late tonight as a weak Tropical Storm.

Wind will not be an issue but a storm surge of 2 to 4 feet south of Morgan City is still expected.

Some heavy rain is also expected with, locally, more than a half a foot possible but no major flooding is anticipated.

Laura is a different creature and is just days behind Marco even though they are not connected at all.

Laura continues to strengthen this morning as it passes now south of Cuba in the warm Caribbean waters with winds now 65 mph with higher gusts.

A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for the Florida Keys due to Laura passing to the south tonight.

Once Laura emerges over the Gulf of Mexico Monday night, environmental conditions will become favorable for possible rapid intensification and Laura could become a Category 2 hurricane on Tuesday into Wednesday with winds over 100 mph.

At this moment the landfall looks like will be in western Louisiana sometime Wednesday night between Lake Charles, Louisiana and Beaumont, Texas.

Threats with Laura will include damaging winds, deadly storm surge and flooding rain.

(OTTO, N.Y.) — A 16-year-old girl died over the weekend after falling off a steep ledge in New York state’s Zoar Valley, authorities said.

Deputies from the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office along with New York State Police troopers responded to the scene near the tiny town of Otto on Saturday evening, after receiving several 911 calls about a girl who had fallen off a ledge in the nature reserve. Additional emergency personnel from various state and local agencies were also dispatched to the scene, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office.

The teenager, whose name has not been released, “sustained fatal injuries from the fall,” the sheriff’s office said.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

The Zoar Valley Multiple Use Area stretches 3,014 acres across western New York state, known for its “spectacular scenery created by its deep gorge, sheer cliffs, flowing waterfalls, and dense forests,” according to the New York Department of Environmental Conservation’s website, which warns visitors to “stay on marked trails” due to “hazards associated with rocks, steep slopes, cliffs and swift water.”

"Mamaw's House": Thomas Rhett unveils song co-written with Morgan Wallen

ABC/Image Group LAThomas Rhett heads to “Mamaw’s House” in a new song co-written with Morgan Wallen

Over the past several months, Thomas has made a habit of sharing unreleased songs via acoustic performances on Instagram.  Over the weekend, he debuted another new song that he recently co-wrote with his “good buddy” Morgan, called “Mamaw’s House,” which takes listeners down a Southern country lane back to childhood days of visiting his grandmother.

The song elicits memories of those summertime days that included fried chicken, front porch swings and hard work at the home where “cussing and complaining” where not allowed.

“If every nightstand had a Bible/Every front porch had a swing/If every backyard had a garden/Every front door had a screen/Yeah maybe this crazy world would straighten up/And slow on down/If every town had a mamaw’s house,” Thomas croons in the chorus.

“Yep. That’s a winner,” Jake Owen champions in the comment section, with Michael Ray also offering his seal of approval with a simple “100” sticker.

Other fresh tracks Thomas has debuted on the platform include “Things Dads Do” and “What’s Your Country Song.”

ALBERTO PIZZOLI/AFP via Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) — It’s been over a month since the world learned the unexpected news that actress Kelly Preston passed away after a quiet battle with breast cancer. Now, her husband of nearly 28 years, John Travolta, is sharing with the world how he’s continuing to honor his wife’s memory.

The Grease actor broke his social media silence on Saturday to update fans how his family’s been adjusting to life without their beloved matriarch.

Sharing a video of a sweet father-daughter dance with his 20-year-old Ella, Travolta revealed that’s just one way the family is keeping Preston’s spirit alive.

“My daughter @ella.travolta and I dancing in memory of momma,” the 660year-old actor penned. “One of Kelly’s favorite things, dancing with me.”

The video shows the two waltzing to a jazzy piano performance before Travolta lifts his daughter’s arm and spins her forward and backward before they clasp hands again.

Travolta and Preston wed in 1991 and had three kids together, Ella, Jett and Benjamin, who is nine.

Jett was 16 when he died in 2009 after suffering a seizure.  He would have turned 28 in April.

Upon announcing Preston’s death on July 13, Travolta wrote “It is with a very heavy heart that I inform you that my beautiful wife Kelly has lost her two-year battle with breast cancer. She fought a courageous fight with the love and support of so many.”

The Saturday Night Fever actor also vowed that “Kelly’s love and life will always be remembered.”

It was later revealed through a family spokesperson that Preston opted to keep her cancer battle a secret.
