Flash flooding expected in southern Plains as West faces another heat wave

No Comments National News

ABC NewsBy MAX GOLEMBO, ABC News

(NEW YORK) — There is a high chance for flash flooding on Wednesday in the southern Plains. Already, more than a foot of rain has fallen since Sunday from Oklahoma to Arkansas.

Additionally, severe storms have produced seven tornadoes in Texas and Arkansas, with significant damage reported near Little Rock, Arkansas.

More dangerous weather is expected for the southern Plains Thursday including, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and southern Missouri. Flood watches and warnings have been issued for those areas.

In the next 24 to 48 hours, 4 to 6 inches of rain is expected from Dallas to Little Rock, Arkansas, where more major flooding is possible.

Out west, fire dangers persist and there is another heat wave developing. Red flag warnings have been issued in the northern Rockies and the High Plains, with wind gusts near 50 mph.

There were evacuations Tuesday with the Slink Fire, which is near the California/Nevada border. The fire is now up to 11,000 acres, but evacuations have been lifted Wednesday.

The LNU Lightning Complex fire is still burning and has now grown to more than 375,000 acres, but the blaze is now 74% contained.

Along the West Coast, a developing heat wave is expected to push temperatures over 110 degrees in some areas.

Heat warnings and advisories have been issued from Oregon through most of California, southern Nevada and into Arizona.

Temperatures are expected to reach triple digits near Los Angeles and all the way into Oregon.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Nana is expected to become a Category 1 hurricane later Wednesday as it moves in the direction of Belize. It could make landfall there early Thursday morning.

A hurricane watch has been issued for Belize and a tropical storm warning for Honduras. Damaging winds and flash flooding will be the biggest threat in these Central American countries.

The rest of the tropical Atlantic continues to be active with several systems trying to develop. For now, there is no imminent threat to the U.S.

'Black-ish' to air election-themed, partially animated special

No Comments Entertainment News

ABC/Craig Sjodin(LOS ANGELES) — Black-ish has never shied away from tackling current events, and the ABC sitcom will aim its sights on the upcoming presidential election in a two-part, partially animated special airing early next month, according to Deadline.

Matthew A. Cherry, best-known for directing the Oscar-winning animated short Hair Love, will helm the back-to-back episodes, set to air on October 4.

That air date could change, though, depending on how the National Basketball League Finals progress.

The specials, however, will not serve as part of black-ish’s seventh season premiere, which will reportedly air in late October, according to the entertainment website.

The live-action Election Special Pt. 1 and the animated Election Special Pt. 2 will also kill two birds with one stone: Aside from being topical, it will also buy the Kenya Barris-helmed show more time to have a full season ready after the pause in production due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Black-ish, starring Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross, airs Wednesday nights on ABC.

(NEW YORK) — An NBA dad had an epic reunion off the basketball court.

Toronto Raptors point guard Fred VanVleet was reunited with his 1-year-old son and 2-year-old daughter Monday, the first time he had seen them since Father’s Day.

VanVleet’s girlfriend Shontai Neal shared a video of the reunion on Instagram, showing their daughter and son running down a hallway to greet VanVleet, and the basketball pro wrapping both of his kids in a big hug.

VanVleet told reporters prior to the reunion that it would be his first time seeing his girlfriend and children since Father’s Day in June.

He and his fellow NBA players have been finishing the season inside a “bubble” at Disney World in Orlando, Florida, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

As the teams advance through the playoffs, their family members are being allowed to join them and watch their games for the first time.

“I know when I get home I feel like Superman because they come running to me, but I will probably be running to them this time,” VanVleet said ahead of his reunion with his kids, according to the NBA. “I can’t wait to be able to see them, and I miss my girl, and just being able to have that affection and that love.”

“That’s a big part of my everyday life, and having to have them here with me, I think that would help right now, for sure,” he said.
