"American Idol" recap: Claudia Conway takes a bow, another contestant scarily face plants

No Comments Entertainment News

ABC/Eric McCandless(HOLLYWOOD) — It was Day 2 of Hollywood Week on Monday’s episode of American Idol, which means it was time for the singers to pair up. Instead of them choosing their own partners though, the twist was that judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan would be doing the pairing.

While some contestants were happy about who the judges picked for their duet partner, others were not — like Claudia Conway and Hannah Everhart. These two ladies had a hard time getting their act together, especially when at one point Claudia had to go looking for Hannah. Eventually, they were able to put together a duet of  Harry Styles’ “Sign of the Times,” which unfortunately didn’t really impress the judges. Claudia’s journey would end here but, luckily for Hannah, they saw something in her and let her through to the next round.

Ronda Felton and Funke Lagoke also gave a lackluster performance as they attempted to steal the hearts of the judges and audiences with their rendition of Barbra Streisand and Celine Dion’s “Tell Him.” However, unlike Claudia and Hannah, both of these ladies made it through — but not before giving the judges and audiences a major scare.

While Lionel was giving feedback to Funke, the American Idol hopeful fainted and face planted onto the stage resulting in a busted chin and a trip to the hospital — but hey, she made it though to sing another day.

Boulder shooting updates: Multiple deaths including police officer, arrest made

(BOULDER, Colo.) — Multiple people were killed, including a police officer, after a suspect opened fire at a King Soopers grocery store in Boulder, Colorado, Monday afternoon, police said.

A person of interest, who was wounded during the incident, was taken into custody, they confirmed.

A law enforcement source told ABC News officers initially responded to a report of someone being shot in the parking lot, and when they arrived at the scene, a suspect opened fire on them.

Several other law enforcement agencies quickly arrived at the scene, including the state SWAT team.

The Boulder Police Department took to Twitter at 2:49 p.m. local time to warn residents of an “active shooter” and telling them to stay away from the area.

Then, at 7:10 p.m. EST, they tweeted out an alert asking people about three miles from the shopping center “to shelter in place” while officers responded to a report of an “armed, dangerous individual.”

The order was lifted around 8:41 p.m.

“PD is investigating to determine if this is related to King Soopers shooting,” the police department wrote.

Eyewitnesses shared videos from the parking lot of the store on social media. The videos show officers ordering a suspect to come out of the store with his hands up and surrender.

Inside the store, shoppers and employees were seen trying to flee or hide.

The suspect was allegedly carrying a long gun, law enforcement sources told ABC News.

Andy Arellano, a store employee, told ABC affiliate KMGH he was concerned for his co-workers and shoppers as shots rang out.

“We were like sitting ducks, you know, and that’s one thing that I’m reliving it and looking at it in my head. And that, that bothers me, I’m still shivering, I’m still shaking,” he said.

Eyewitness Andrew Hummel told KMGH he was at a store when he heard the gunshots and ran out of the shopping center with others.

“Everybody kind of sprinted toward the back of the store,” Hummel told the station.

Hummel said his roommate, who works at the store where the shooting happened, went to a storage room and hid there with some customers, texting Hummel and others updates.

“Yeah, I think one of the biggest scary text[s] that he sent he just said, ‘I love you guys, like thank you for everything, in case, like, things go bad,'” Hummel said. “That was a really hard text … that’s something that I would never want to hear from any of my friends because I knew the seriousness of what was going on and I was horrified. It was truly horrifying.”

Sarah Moonshadow, another eyewitness, told the station she was in the supermarket with her son when she heard four gunshots.

“We were hiding down, kind of in the self-checkout area, and I just knew like this is a problem, and I started counting in between shots and then I just grabbed Nicholas, I said, ‘Move now.'”

President Joe Biden has been briefed about the shooting, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Monday night.

Attorney General Merrick Garland has also been briefed, a Department of Justice official told ABC News.

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis tweeted out a statement Monday afternoon reacting to the shooting.

“Like my fellow Coloradans, I am closely watching unfolding events at King Soopers in Boulder,” he wrote. “My prayers are with our fellow Coloradans in this time of sadness and grief as we learn more about the extent of the tragedy.”

In another statement later Monday evening, Polis asked for residents to have patience as the investigation continues.

“Right now, the biggest priority is to let local law enforcement and the City of Boulder to do their work to ensure the safety of those involved,” he said.

Kroger, the parent company of King Soopers, released a statement expressing their condolences and sympathies to their associates and customers and thanking the “first responders who so bravely responded to this tragic situation.” They also said they are cooperating with investigators.

United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, the union that represents the store workers, said on Twitter Monday night that they are also monitoring the situation.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.

NBA Hall of Famer Elgin Baylor dies

(LOS ANGELES) — Los Angeles Lakers legend Elgin Baylor has died, the team announced Monday.

He was 86.

“Elgin was the love of my life and my best friend,” said his wife Elaine, in a statement to the Lakers. “And like everyone else, I was in awe of his immense courage, dignity and the time he gave to all fans. At this time we ask that I and our family be allowed to mourn his passing in privacy.”

Baylor was drafted by the then Minneapolis Lakers first overall in 1958 and won the Rookie of the Year award after averaging 24.9 points, 15.0 rebounds, and 4.1 assists.

He would play for both the Minneapolis and Los Angeles Lakers for 14 seasons and was named an NBA All-star 11 times while also being named to the All-NBA first team 10 times. He averaged 27.4 points and 13.5 rebounds in his career.

Before going pro, he spent a year at the College Of Idaho before transferring to Seattle University, leading them to their first-ever National Championship game.

Seattle’s basketball team honored him in a tweet.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Baylor family at this time,” said Seattle Director of Athletics Shaney Fink in a statement. “One of the greatest basketball players of all time, Elgin led Seattle U to its first ever NCAA Championship game in 1958. Throughout and beyond his illustrious career as a player, coach and general manager in the NBA, Elgin kept close ties to the city of Seattle and his alma mater, Seattle U. Elgin possessed an exceptional personality and warmth, and an admirable generosity. We will be forever grateful for the impact he has had on Seattle U Athletics and our student-athletes.”

Lakers Governor Jeanie Buss honored Baylor in a statement.

“Elgin was THE superstar of his era – his many accolades speak to that,” said Buss. “He was one of the few Lakers players whose career spanned from Minneapolis to Los Angeles. But more importantly he was a man of great integrity, even serving his country as a U.S. Army reservist, often playing for the Lakers only during his weekend pass. He is one of the all-time Lakers greats with his No. 22 jersey retired in the rafters and his statue standing guard in front of STAPLES Center. He will always be part of the Lakers legacy. On behalf of the entire Lakers family, I’d like to send my thoughts, prayers and condolences to Elaine and the Baylor family.”

In a statement, NBA Commissoner Adam Silver said Baylor was one of the first NBA superstars.

Baylor was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Hall Of Fame in 1977.

Following his playing career, he became a coach for the New Orleans Jazz and served as Vice President of Basketball Operations for the Los Angeles Clippers.

He is survived by his wife Elanie, their daughter and son, and two other children from a previous marriage.

No Comments Entertainment News

Fennell directing Carey Mulligan on the set of “Promising Young Woman”/Focus Features(LOS ANGELES) — After making Oscar history by being the only woman nominated in the Best Director category for a directorial debut, Promising Young Woman‘s Emerald Fennell’s next trick will be to bring a magical comics heroine to life.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that Fennell will write the script for Zatanna, a feature based on the DC Comics character of the same name, a woman well versed in the magic arts. The film is being produced by J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot company, which incidentally is developing an HBO Max series about another magic wielding character with whom Zatanna is sometimes paired in comics pages: John Constantine.

Zatanna Zatara first appeared in the pages of DC Comics in 1964. Her “day job” as a stage magician provides cover for her actual reality-bending abilities.

Her character has also appeared in a comic team-up series called Justice League Dark, which gathers DC’s heroes who deal in the supernatural and the occult, including Constantine.

Russell Dickerson finds new meaning in "Home Sweet" through St. Jude partnership

No Comments Country Music News

Triple Tigers RecordsRussell Dickerson is elevating the meaning behind his song “Home Sweet” by partnering with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Russell’s current single follows his journey with wife Kailey from newlyweds to expecting their first child, son Remington born in September 2020. The singer finds new meaning in the track by supporting the St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway that sees the famous hospital giving away homes in more than 40 markets across the U.S.

“It’s not just, ‘hey, come in and get treated.’ It’s, ‘hey, come in and we’ll make it feel like the least amount of uprooting, make it feel as normal as possible, just to preserve that ‘Home Sweet,’ really,” he describes of the Memphis-based hospital.

Co-written with Lady A member and fellow St. Jude supporter Charles Kelley and Casey Brown, Russell adds that the meaning of home is being with the people you love, regardless of physical location.

“Wherever you’re with your person, that’s home,” he says. “That’s what life is all about is having each other.”

“Home Sweet” is featured on the singer’s latest album, Southern Symphony. It follows a string of #1 hits including his debut single “Yours” and most recent, “Love You Like I Used To.”
