Hurricane Sally updates: Storm makes landfall as Category 2, brings life-threatening rain to Gulf Coast

ABC NewsBy WILLIAM MANSELL and EMILY SHAPIRO, ABC News

(NEW YORK) — Hurricane Sally made landfall near Gulf Shores, Alabama, just before 6 a.m. ET Wednesday as a dangerous Category 2 storm, and is now slamming the Gulf Coast with torrential rain and life-threatening flooding.

The latest

Sally, now weakened to a Category 1, is crawling north-northeast at 5 mph, near the Alabama-Florida border.

Even though Sally is weakening in terms of wind speed, the torrential rainfall is extremely dangerous, falling at 4 inches per hour in parts of Alabama and Florida.

Parts of western Florida and the southeastern Alabama coast are under flash flood emergencies through the evening.

Officials in Baldwin County, Alabama, reported “major to catastrophic flooding,” urging residents to stay off the roads.

In Florida’s Santa Rosa County, officials reported downed trees and power lines and said emergency crews were “only responding to high water calls due to the high wind and the excessive rain.”

Escambia County, Florida, is facing massive flooding due to the historic rainfall, local officials said. Water rescue operations are ongoing there as residents in about 300 homes did not evacuate, officials said.

In Pensacola in Escambia County, where wind gusts reached 92 mph, the flooding is extremely dangerous.

Downtown Pensacola is submerged under at least 3 to 4 feet of water while storm surge in the area climbed to 5.6 feet.

“Flooded roadways and intersections, along with hazardous debris in roadways (locations), have become too numerous to list,” the Pensacola Police Department said. “Please stay off the roadways now.”

Sally has even destroyed a Pensacola bridge; local authorities posted this photo showing the missing section.

The slow-moving storm forced some Alabama first responders to stay indoors — the Orange Beach Police Department said it could no longer respond to calls.

“Present conditions are preventing us from answering calls at this time. Please take all measures to be as safe as possible,” the department tweeted. “If you have the option to move to higher ground do so now.”

Power outages have impacted more than 278,000 customers in Alabama, 225,000 customers in Florida and 3,000 customers in Mississippi.

The forecast

Hurricane Sally’s latest path shows the storm tracking northeast. After Wednesday, remnants of Sally will continue to inch inland toward Atlanta, where up to a foot of rain is possible.

Heavy rain will even spread into South Carolina, North Carolina and southern Virginia, where some areas could see up to 6 inches of rain. Flash flooding is expected there Friday.

This storm has also resulted in several tornado warnings, though no tornadoes have been confirmed yet. A tornado watch was issued for parts of Florida, Georgia, and Alabama until 7 p.m. ET.

Sally is the eighth continental U.S. named storm to make landfall in 2020. The other named storms to make landfall in 2020 so far have been: Bertha, Cristobal, Fay, Hanna, Isaias, Laura and Marco.

Sally’s landfall in Gulf Shores, Alabama, comes 16 years to the day after Hurricane Ivan made landfall in Gulf Shores as a Category 3 storm.

Capitol Records NashvilleKeith Urban and pop collaborator Pink swap bar-room stories, regrets and battle scars in “One Too Many,” their just-released duet.

“I spend all my money drinking on my own, yeah / In this bar, just sat here staring at my phone,” the pair harmonize in the chorus. “And I keep second guessing, where did I go wrong? / I know I’m proud, but I’ve had one too many / Come take me home…”

The song is one of three collaborations on Keith’s just-around-the-corner album, The Speed of Now Part 1. He also teams up with up-and-comer Breland and guitarist Nile Rodgers on another track, and includes a duet version of “We Were” with one of the song’s writers, Eric Church.

Keith’s new song is out just in time for tonight’s ACM Awards ceremony, where he and Pink will deliver the debut live performance of “One Too Many.”

He’s also hosting the show, and is the reigning ACM Entertainer of the Year. Tune in to watch on CBS at 8 p.m. ET.

ABC special about 2019 Notre-Dame fire will bring us a "ray of hope," says filmmaker

• No Comments • Entertainment News

ABC(PARIS) — Wednesday night at 9 p.m ET, ABC airs Notre-Dame: Our Lady of Paris, a documentary about the fire that ravaged the legendary cathedral in April 2019.

It’s told via dramatic, first-hand accounts of the firefighters who saved the structure, as well as the clergy, church administrators and more.

The firefighters are the true heroes of the story, as they risked their lives to keep the cathedral’s nearly 1,000-year-old towers from collapsing.

Producer and director Jules Naudet [shzool naw-DAY] says firefighters are a very special breed: full of “great pride, a great humanity, and a great sense of humor.”

“They are aware of the dangers, but at the same time, this is what they love to do,” he notes.  “No one could have stopped them going up these towers…and they were so proud of saving [the cathedral] and doing it without anyone losing their lives…was not an easy challenge….[it]was a kind of a losing proposition at first.”

As the documentary shows, seemingly all of Paris comes together in support as the firefighters battle the blaze.  It’s something Naudet hopes will be truly inspiring for people to watch.

“We see that they put their lives on the line for something greater than all of us,” he says, adding that he believes “that moment where everyone got together to try to save something that belonged to all of us” will resonate even more at this time in our history.

“That ray of hope that I hope that this documentary will bring to the people is that when we put our heads together and our sweat and our blood…we can achieve anything.”

“It is really the beating heart of Paris, Notre-Dame,” Naudet adds. “It will be rebuilt and, little by little, we’ll get there.”

If Justin Bieber wins any ACM trophies tonight, Dan + Shay will "hand-deliver" them

• No Comments • Country Music News

ABC/Image Group LABecause 2020 just can’t get any crazier, Justin Bieber is nominated for three Academy of Country Music Awards tonight.  The nods come for his hit “10,000 Hours” collaboration with Dan + Shay — and the duo tells ABC Audio that not only is Justin “very excited” about them, but they’ve promised to “hand-deliver” the trophies to him if they win.

“Yeah, he’s definitely informed,” says Shay Mooney when asked if the pop superstar is even aware that he’s up for a bunch of awards tonight.

“He is very excited and it’s really cool for him: He’s always been a huge country music fan. So to be able to be in this genre — something that he’s not normally involved in — I think was…kind of a cool check off his bucket list,” Shay adds.

And if they win?

“We’ll hand-deliver [the trophies],” laughs Dan Smyers. “[Like], ‘Hey man, [remember] we put out a song together?'”

“No, it’s awesome. It’s super exciting to have him on the song,” Dan adds, all joking aside. “I know he was super-pumped…when we first got it going, he was like, ‘Man, thank you guys for putting me on country radio. This is amazing.’ And we’re like, ‘Thank you for introducing us to listeners in China!'”

“He has such a big fan base and whenever the song dropped it, you know, exposed our music to so many people and we’ll always be grateful for that, man,” Dan admits. “It’s a big one.”

“10,000 Hours” scored nods for Song of the Year, Video of the Year and Music Event of the Year at the ACMs (Music Event went to Miranda Lambert in a pre-ceremony announcement.)  The show airs live from Nashville tonight on CBS with host Keith Urban.
