'Lovecraft Country''s Jamie Chung talks positive fan reaction to "dream role"

• No Comments • Entertainment News

Eli Joshua Ade/HBO (NEW YORK) — Lovecraft Country’s latest episode that aired Sunday featured a standout portrayal by Jamie Chung that fans have been buzzing about all week.

She played the mysterious Ji-Ah, a Korean nurse who’s revealed to be the mythical and deadly multi-tailed fox spirit known as the kumiho. Playing the part was a welcomed challenge for Chung, who calls it a “dream role.”

“I prepared so hard for this role,” she tells ABC Audio. “I mean, I speak conversational Korean with my parents, but I’ve never had a Korean role like this where I’m speaking Korean for the entire episode. And, you know, there was dancing and singing involved and really, as an actor, this is kind of like the dream role.”

To have all that hard work pay off with viewers’ positive reactions has been “validating,” she says. Chung says she hopes Lovecraft Country will inspire similar meaty roles for Asian American actors.

“For [the showrunners] to give an opportunity to tell the story of this kumiho and, you know, take the story back to Korea during the Korean War — like, who does that?” she says. “And then the whole episode is going to be in Korean. Like, that is a bold choice.”

She adds, “And yes, these kind of roles — guest star role, by the way — [are] few and far between. So, you know, I do hope that this opens the door for more opportunities for storytellers to go there and for actors to have these kind of opportunities.”

Lovecraft Country airs Sundays on HBO at 9 p.m.

(NEW YORK) — The skateboarding world is mourning one of the greats. Keith Hufnagel, who rose to prominence in the 90s, has died at the age of 46 following a battle with brain cancer.

Hufnagel is hailed as one of the most influential skateboarders and launched the successful HUF Worldwide skate shop brand in 2002. His company confirmed the passing on Thursday.

“We are absolutely heartbroken to deliver the news today that HUF founder Keith Hufnagel has passed away,” HUF Worldwide announced via Instagram. “Keith battled brain cancer for the past 2.5 years. And though he beat the odds and fought back much longer than his diagnosis permitted, he ultimately and unfortunately lost the fight.”

“Keith paved the way for all of us – as a respected professional skateboarder, shop owner, brand founder, footwear and apparel designer, creative director, and industry leader. He showed us how to do it, and how do it right,” the brand continued, noting how “Keith loved skateboarding and the culture around it. He did things his way and did them for the right reasons.”

HUF Worldwide offered more insight on Hufnagel’s character, adding, “Keith loved and supported the people around him. He would do anything for his friends, family and children. He passionately wanted to see others succeed. And we all loved him for it.”

“Keith’s legacy will continue to live on at HUF. Today, tomorrow and forever,” the company concluded. “Rest in peace, Keith.”

Hufnagel, a New York City-native born in 1974, was given his first skateboard when he turned 4 and went on to become a massive figure among pro skaters during the 90s and 00s.

Carrie Underwood's 'My Gift' unwraps a busy season of holiday music, with a cameo by son Isaiah

• No Comments • Country Music News

Joseph LlanesCarrie Underwood‘s first full-length holiday album, My Gift, arrives today, a full three months ahead of Christmas.

While John Legend joins her for the track “Hallelujah,” there’s no guest quite as special as her son, Isaiah Fisher, who’s featured on his mom’s version of “Little Drummer Boy.”

“It was wonderful to have Isaiah be a part of what I love,” Carrie reflects. “You know, having that moment, I was like, ‘I don’t know how he’s gonna do. I don’t know.'”

“He was super excited to be there,” she adds. “If nothing else, [I thought], he’ll have, like, a fun day seeing what mommy does.”

Even before he turns six in February, Isaiah’s already delivered an impressive performance behind the mic.

“It was such a great moment for me as a mom to have him share something that I really love to do,” Carrie continues. “And he ended up being really great in the studio, which was just like, I was so proud.”

Vinyl copies of My Gift will be available October 30, with Carrie’s full-length special — complete with a live orchestra and choir — set to premiere this yuletide on HBO Max.

Carrie leads off a busy season of country stars putting out new holiday offerings in 2020, as Dolly Parton‘s A Holly Dolly Christmas follows on October 2, just ahead of Runaway June‘s When I Think About Christmas on October 16.

Buck Owens‘ A Merry Hee Haw Christmas also gets a 2020 re-release on November 13, showcasing the country classic, “Santa Looked a Lot Like Daddy.”

Expect at least one more major holiday offering — as well as some single tracks — to be announced as well.

Jeff Daniels says 'The Comey Rules' could be a game changer

• No Comments • Entertainment News

Ben Mark Holzberg/CBS Television Studios/SHOWTIME(LOS ANGELES) — Jeff Daniels plays former FBI head James Comey in the new Showtime movie The Comey Rule, which debuts Sunday night.

Daniels fought hard to get the film released before election day, and he tells ABC Audio that the film might change some minds.

“I think it could have an impact on the 20 percent in the middle. I’d like to think those people still exist,” he explains.

Adds Daniels, “A lot of them…believe in decency, civility and doing unto others,” and they’re not seeing that from Donald Trump.

The film, which will air in two parts, focuses on Comey’s role in the Hillary Clinton e-mail investigation, and his rocky relationship with President Trump. If you’re a little foggy on the details, Daniels says that’s okay.

“I think what happened will come back to them,” he tells ABC Audio.. “And then like me, if they’re like me, they’re going to find out things that they didn’t know. That the reasons why he did what he did or what he was up against, if he chose to do this versus choosing to do that, the rock and a hard place thing that Comey found himself in.”

So what other things did Daniels discover about Comey?

“I learned how thoughtful he is, that he listens to other opinions different from his own.  That he respects people. All people.  People of color, women,” he says.

“I found him to be smart, but he was guided by something bigger than himself, and he stuck to that and religiously, And that was hard to do, Daniels continues. “He was an apolitical public servant.  At a time when the country is so polarized that to be a political as like to be an alien.”
