Tropical Storm Gamma gaining strength as it heads toward Mexico

• No Comments • National News

ABC NewsBY: DANIEL MANZO, ABC NEWS

(NEW YORK) — Tropical Storm Gamma is gaining strength Saturday morning and now has winds of 65 mph. The storm is moving northwest at 9 mph and is about 75 miles south of Cozumel, Mexico.

Satellite imagery of Gamma shows a rather robust convection occurring over the warm waters of the western Caribbean Sea.

On the current forecast track, Gamma will make landfall on the Yucatan Peninsula later Saturday and then begin to weaken.

The main threat right now for Gamma in Mexico will be the 15 inches of rain that will be possible in some areas, which could produce life-threatening flash flooding near where the storm makes landfall. A separate area of heavy rain, far away from the center of Gamma, could bring up to 20 inches of rain over the Mexican states of Campeche, Tabasco and Chiapas. This could produce major flash flooding and mudslides.

After impacting the Yucatan Peninsula, Gamma will emerge in the Gulf of Mexico. However, steering currents will become quite weak and it does not appear Gamma will have much opportunity to strengthen as it meanders for the better part of the upcoming week. Another Tropical system will try to sneak in behind Gamma, likely reaching the Gulf of Mexico by the middle of next week.

It remains unclear how some of this will play out, including whether this second tropical disturbance will have any opportunity for strengthening and how it steers through the Gulf of Mexico. Currently, the system has a 40% chance of development in the next five days. It’s too early to tell whether any of this tropical activity is a threat to the U.S.

In California, there were a couple of new daily record high temperatures on Friday, including Escondido, which hit 105 degrees, Palmdale, which hit 101 degrees and Sandberg, which hit 93 degrees. Anaheim tied its record of 101 degrees. In Arizona, Tucson hit 103 degrees, which tied its all-time October record that was previously set just this past Thursday.

There will be a brief period of elevated fire conditions due to gusty, dry winds Saturday morning in parts of Southern California. It will also be another hot day across California and the desert southwest, where temperature records will be possible again.

However, there is some good news for the western U.S., which has been plagued by record heat and dry weather. A major pattern change is in sight for the region in the upcoming week.

Temperatures will drop some 10 to15 degrees over the course of the upcoming week, from the 90s down into the 80s and even 70s. This is quite a welcome relief for the region. It even looks like some beneficial rain will arrive in Northern California by next weekend.

Harvey Weinstein faces six new charges of sexual assault in LA

• No Comments • Entertainment News

Kena Betancur/Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) — Harvey Weinstein was charged in Los Angeles Friday with the sexual assaults of two more women that allegedly occurred more than a decade ago.

The disgraced movie mogul faces three new counts of rape and three new counts of forcible oral copulation involving the two women, the LA County District Attorney’s office said.

An amended criminal complaint alleges that Weinstein raped one woman at a hotel in Beverly Hills between September 2004 and September 2005, and raped another woman twice between November 2009 and November 2010.

Weinstein now faces 11 sexual assault counts involving five women in California.

“I am thankful to the first women who reported these crimes and whose courage have given strength to others to come forward,” District Attorney Jackie Lacey said. “The willingness of these latest victims to testify against a powerful man gives us the additional evidence we need to build a compelling criminal case.”

If convicted as charged in the amended complaint, Weinstein faces up to 140 years to life in state prison. He’s already serving a 23-year prison sentence in New York after convictions in February for rape and sexual assault against two women.

Prosecutors are seeking the temporary custody of Weinstein from New York. An extradition hearing is set for December 11 in Buffalo.

Chris Janson enlists his real-life working-class heroes in “Waitin’ on 5” music video

Jared C. Tilton/Getty ImagesChris Janson spotlights some hard-working men and women in the music video for his single “Waitin’ on 5,” a blue-collar anthem that raises a glass to the end of the workday.

The video is also family affair: Chris’ dad appears in his real-life role as an auto-body painter, and the singer’s father-in-law can also be spotted in the clip.

Elsewhere, the story line highlights welders, construction workers, farmers and more. The video culminates in an all-American cookout after sunset, with shared beers around a campfire.

“I have so much respect for the hard-working men and women in this country,” Chris explains. “I am proud to count members of my own family, like my dad and father-in-law, among them. This song and the video are my way of honoring what they and so many others do every day — and encouraging them to have a little fun when the job is done!”

Speaking of “Done,” that’s the name of the single that preceded “Waitin’ on 5” on the charts, and the two songs couldn’t be more different. While Chris lets loose in party mode with his new single, “Done” is a ‘90s-inspired, mid-tempo love song dedicated to his wife, Kelly.

This summer, “Done” became the fourth number-one single in Chris’ career and his first-ever multi-week chart-topper.

Regina King’s 'One Night in Miami' to hit theaters Christmas Day, Amazon Prime January 15

• No Comments • Entertainment News

Amazon Studios(LOS ANGELES) — Amazon Studios has officially set a release date for Regina King’s directorial debut.

One Night in Miami, written by Olivier Award-nominated Kemp Powers, is set to hit select theaters on December 25, 2020, followed by a global launch on January 15, 2021 exclusively on Prime Video.

This marks the Oscar-winning actress’ first feature film in the director’s seat.

“To complete and release a film within the same year is a difficult task,” King said in a statement. “We welcomed the challenge because we knew now was the time for this film to be released. Amazon fully supported our intention and I could not be more excited this prescient story will be seen across the globe.”

Based on Powers’ 2013 stage play, One Night in Miami spotlights some real-life civil rights icons and celebrities during the Jim Crow-era, with Aldis Hodge starring as Jim Brown, Leslie Odom, Jr. as Sam Cooke, Kingsley Ben-Adir as Malcolm X, and Eli Goree as Muhammad Ali.

The film follows young Cassius Clay, before he became Ali, after his victory at the Miami Beach Convention Center against Sonny Liston in 1964.

While crowds flooded the streets to celebrate Clay’s title as the World Heavyweight Boxing Champion, he himself was unable to stay on the island due to the segregation laws of the time. Instead, he spent the night celebrating with his three friends at the Hampton House Motel, located in one of Miami’s historically black neighborhoods.

One Night in Miami will also feature the original song “Speak Now,” co-written by Odom Jr.

“Hell of a View”: Eric Church opts for an off-the-beaten-path adventure in his new song

• No Comments • Country Music News

UMG NashvilleEric Church continues to make good on his promise to release a whole bunch of new songs this year.

His latest is “Hell of a View,” a midtempo, rugged tune about taking the road less traveled, and inviting a love interest along for the ride. As Eric points out in the song’s lyrics, it’s not always easy carving your own trail, but there are some serious upsides, too.

“This ain’t for everybody/Toes hanging off the ledge/Like we got nothin’ to lose,” he sings in the chorus. “Ain’t always heaven, baby/This livin’ on the edge/You holdin’ me holdin’ you/It’s a hell of a view…”

“Hell of a View” is one of a batch of songs that Eric wrote during a prolific writing retreat to rural North Carolina, where he penned and recorded a song per day for almost a month.

It was that creative growth spurt that also produced recent releases like “Bad Mother Trucker” and “Crazyland,” as well as Eric’s current single, “Stick That in Your Country Song.”

The Chief has been teasing new music and performing unreleased songs occasionally throughout 2020.
