Warner Bros. and © DC Comics(WASHINGTON DC) — As it does every year, the Library of Congress has chosen a selection of films for preservation in its National Film Registry. Among this year’s 25 entries are the Oscar-winning Batman blockbuster The Dark Knight, the beloved 1978 musical Grease, The Blues Brothers and A Clockwork Orange.

The films, which must be at least ten years old, are chosen for their “cultural, historic or aesthetic importance to the nation’s film heritage.”

ABCJimmie Allen, Dolly Parton and Carrie Underwood are among the many artists who turned to social media over the weekend to pay tribute to Charley Pride following the country legend’s death from complications due to COVID-19.

Jimmie, who performed with Pride at the CMA Awards last month and presented him with the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award, shared a lengthy video reflecting on Pride’s impact on his life.

“He came into country music in a time where there was so much public hate toward people because of the color of their skin…It showed his courage. It showed his love and passion for music,” Jimmie says in a video titled “Rest in Love Mr. Pride,” citing Pride as a “hero,” “friend” and “grandfather” figure in his life.

For her part, Dolly tweeted, “I’m so heartbroken that one of my dearest and oldest friends, Charley Pride, has passed away. It’s even worse to know that he passed away from COVID-19. What a horrible, horrible virus. Charley, we will always love you.”

Darius Rucker also expressed remorse in his online post, citing Pride as “one of the finest people I know.” He went on, “My heart is so heavy. Charley Pride was an icon a legend and any other word u wanna use for his greatness. He destroyed Barriers and did things that no one had ever done.”

Carrie also paid homage to the icon, calling him a “sweet and legendary man” who had a gift for remembering birthdays. “I don’t know how he remembered, but he always did…I’m so glad I got a few chances to be in the presence of Charley,” she said

According to a statement posted on Charley’s Facebook, the 86-year-old singer was hospitalized with COVID-19-type symptoms in late November. He passed away from complications from the virus on December 12.

US administers first doses of Pfizer coronavirus vaccine

(NEW YORK) — The rollout of the first coronavirus vaccine began Monday morning as the first doses of the Pfizer medication was administered to health care workers and nursing home staffers.

A doctor from Northwell LIJ Medical Center on Long Island was vaccinated at 9:23 a.m. during a livestreamed event with New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. “

You didn’t flinch,” Cuomo said.

The University of Louisville Hospital in Kentucky will receive its first delivery of the vaccine at 9:30 a.m. and at 10:30 a.m. Three doctors and two nurses will receive the vaccine.

Other locations in Connecticut, New York, Iowa, Washington, D.C., and Michigan are also expected to administer vaccine doses on Monday.

The rollout comes less than a week after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized the vaccine for emergency use for Americans over 16. The order from the FDA led to the pharmaceutical company shipping 2.9 million doses to 636 sites across the country.

Pfizer, which produced the vaccine alongside German company BioNTech, began shipping the doses from its Michigan warehouse Sunday directly to those sites, which were pre-selected by governors and local health officials.

Pfizer said it would roll out a second batch of 2.9 million doses shortly after the first batch. The U.S. government is opting to keep 500,000 doses in reserve to address any shipping or distribution mishaps.

The vaccine, which requires two doses for full inoculation, began distribution in the United Kingdom last week.

The vaccine is the first in the country to use the genetic technology mRNA instead of viral components. Pfizer claimed its trials showed the vaccine was 95% effective at preventing symptomatic COVID-19.

The FDA will hold a hearing on Dec. 17 with Moderna, which also developed an mRNA-based vaccine, before possibly giving emergency authorization for its deployment.

Moderna said its clinical trials showed the vaccine was 94% effective at preventing the coronavirus and trial patients who had the vaccine had elevated antibodies in their system three months after the vaccines were administered.

According to the World Health Organization, there are 52 COVID-19 vaccines in human trials, and 162 vaccines in preclinical development.

The vaccine developments come as the U.S. is in the midst of the deadliest period of the pandemic, according to health data. America leads the world with over 16 million cases and close to 300,000 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University’s Coronavirus Resource Center.

The seven-day averages of new daily cases, 211,494, hospitalizations, 106,656, and deaths, 2,427, were at record highs on Dec. 13, according to health data from the COVID Tracking Project.

Denzel Washington recalls the time he egged on Chadwick Boseman to propose to his then-girlfriend

No Comments Entertainment News

Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) — Denzel Washington opened up about the time he egged on Chadwick Boseman to marry his then-girlfriend.

Washington told This Morning on Sunday that he teased Boseman when he invited Taylor Simone Ledward onto the set of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Boseman’s final film before losing his four-year battle with colon cancer, which Washington was not aware of at the time of filming.

“Credit to him; he kept it to himself,” said the two-time Oscar winner, who produced the Netflix film. “It was nobody’s business.  He was there to deliver and he delivered.  Certain members of his team knew. His wife was there. They weren’t even married yet.”

Washington said that, because he was missing the critical context, he read too much into the way Ledward looked at Boseman.

“She kept her eye on him and she watched him. I’m like, ‘Man she loves that guy.’ But I didn’t know what we know now,” the Flight actor confessed. “I used to watch how she took care of him and I actually said to him, I said, ‘Man, you need to put a ring on that finger.”

Besides never publicly revealing his cancer battle, Boseman, 43, was notoriously private about his personal life and rarely opened up about his relationships.  It is unknown when he proposed to and wed Ledward.

The Black Panther star’s family announced August 28 that Boseman “died in his home, with his wife and family by his side.”

Despite the industry losing such a beloved actor, Washington says that the legacy Boseman left behind speaks volumes.

“He did all he could do with what he was given and he left it here for us to enjoy. Chad will live forever. Period,” he declared.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, premieres Friday, December 17, on Netflix.

Tyler Perry donates $100k to the legal defense fund of Kenneth Walker, Breonna Taylor's boyfriend

No Comments Entertainment News

ABC News/Steve Iervolino(ATLANTA) — Kenneth Walker, the boyfriend of the late Breonna Taylor, received a major boost in his legal defense fund thanks to Tyler Perry.

TMZ reports that Walker is facing a lawsuit from Louisville, Kentucky police officer Jonathan Mattingly, who was one of the three troopers involved in the fatal shooting of Breonna Taylor.

Mattingly was struck in the leg before he and other plainclothes police tried entering Walker’s residence.  While it has not been proven that he was struck by one of Walker’s bullets, Mattingly is suing on grounds of emotional distress and trauma.

GoFundMe has since been launched to help Walker fight the charges.

The campaign reportedly had a slow start until Perry breathed new life into it, sending four separate donations on Sunday to help Walker hit his financial goal of $100,000.

The Madea’s Family Reunion star first issued two $10,000 donations before following up with a $50,000 and then $30,000 donation.  The campaign currently sits at over $102,000.

As previously reported, Walker said that when he first heard the officers trying to break down his door, he believed it was a break in and fired his licensed weapon to defend his property.

Police returned fire and Taylor was killed during the exchange.

Walker was also arrested and charged with attempted murder of a police officer as well as first-degree assault.  Those charges were later dropped.
