Kelly Clarkson reveals Garth Brooks-inspired lyrics of song about her divorce

No Comments Country Music News

Weiss Eubanks/NBCUniversalKelly Clarkson is putting the emotions surrounding her divorce from husband Brandon Blackstock into song — with some inspiration from country music legend Garth Brooks.

When Garth appeared on her talk show recently, Kelly told him that despite all the advice she’s received about how to handle her divorce, it was one of Garth’s signature songs that really helped her understand what she was going through.

“There’s been a lot of books and people always give you stuff to help,” she said. “There’s so much shame and guilt, and everybody sends you stuff, and I was just kind of working through it and I couldn’t quite nail down the feeling.”

“You don’t want to crap on [the marriage] — you don’t want to say that didn’t count or matter, but you don’t know what to put in it because it didn’t work out how you wanted,” she added.

Kelly said it wasn’t until Garth’s 1989 hit “The Dance” came up on her playlist that she said to herself, ” ‘No, that’s the thing. That’s it.'”

The song is about being glad that you experienced something, even if it ended painfully.  The lyrics say,”I’m glad I didn’t know/the way it all would end/the way it all would go/our lives are better left to chance/I would have missed the pain/but I’d have had to miss the dance.”

“All of the books were helpful, but it’s so funny, I guess because I’m a musician…I was listening to ‘The Dance’… and I got the point,” she said.

As a result, Kelly said, she’s written her own “therapeutic” song, which will be on her next album, and then sang a bit of it.  The lyrics include the line, “Even though my heart is broken/It was worth the dance anyway.”

No Comments Country Music News

Scott StemScotty McCreery is sharing the latest honor for his hit song “Five More Minutes” with the Grand Ole Opry.

During his appearance on the Opry on Saturday, Scotty presented representatives from the venue with a plaque commemorating double platinum certification for the song by the RIAA.

Scotty debuted “Five More Minutes” at the Opry in June 2016 and credits the institution for releasing the video of his performance that generated the initial buzz that eventually led the song to become his first #1 single.

“The Opry played a major role in the success of that song, and I will always be thankful to them for that,” Scotty praises.

The American Idol winner dedicated his performance of “Five More Minutes” on Saturday night to Charley Pride, who passed away from complications due to COVID-19 the same day. Coincidentally, Charley was also performing on the Opry the night Scotty debuted “Five More Minutes.”

“Charley was always kind to me,” Scotty says. “Whenever we saw each other, we’d talk baseball, music, and more, and he treated me like he had known me forever. Country Music lost a giant this weekend.”

“Five More Minutes” is the lead single off Scotty’s 2018 album, Seasons Change.

Chris Haston/NBCU Photo Bank(LOS ANGELES) — Insert that gif of Steve Carell’s Michael Scott screaming “NO!” here — The Office is leaving Netflix…but it will be heading exclusively to NBC’s streaming platform Peacock in January.

In a press announcement designed to look like an inter-office memo from paper company Dunder Mifflin, the streaming service declared that The Office, a “documentary” containing “footage that was shot at Dunder Mifflin Scranton between 2005 and 2013,” will be coming to the platform.

All 201 episodes of the acclaimed sitcom will be moving to Peacock, along with “Superfan Episodes” containing never-before-seen footage, curated themed episodes, clip playlists, as well as “The Office Zen,” a 24/7 channel of ambient noise of the, “sights and sounds of an office for anyone working at home.”

And for another deep cut from the show, the memo from Dunder Mifflin’s onetime CEO David Wallace closes with a reference to the “unfortunate cartoon mouse/duck watermark fiasco from 2007.”

Peacock Premium will run you $9.99 a month; a less expensive commercials-included option costs $4.99/month.
