Courtesy of 2911 MediaEd Bruce, the country singer-songwriter best known for writing the classic “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys,” died of natural causes on Friday, January 8 in Clarksville, Tennessee. He was 81 years old.

Bruce was an Arkansas native who got his start in the late 1950s when he began writing and recording songs under the direction of Sun Studios’ Sam Philips. He simultaneously pursued a career as a singer, as well as a songwriter for other artists. While his own releases garnered him minor success, Bruce’s biggest hits always ended up being the songs he wrote for others.

Tanya Tucker found major success with multiple songs written by Bruce during the ‘70s, including 1974’s “The Man That Turned My Mama On” and 1977’s “Texas (When I Die).”

In 1978, he scored what is perhaps his most recognizable recording when Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings cut a version of his song “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys.”

He continued to write and release his own music throughout the ‘80s, and also began to act in TV shows, commercials and theatrical releases.

Bruce received the Arkansas Country Music Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2018.

(LOS ANGELES) — Tommy Lasorda, the Hall of Fame manager who led the Dodgers to 2 World Series titles, has died at the age of 93.

In a statement, the Dodgers said Lasorda went into cardiac arrest at 10:09 p.m. Thursday night. He was taken to the hospital with resuscitation in progress, before being being pronounced dead shortly before 11:00 p.m.

In all, Lasorda spent 71 years with the Dodgers organization, managing the team for 20 seasons and racking up 1,599 wins. Most recently, he served as a special advisor to the team for the last 14 seasons.

Lasorda could often be seen on the field during games, wearing his number 2 jersey. The Dodgers retired the number in 1997, the same year he was elected to the Hall of Fame.

The Dodgers also said that Lasorda often expressed his desire to see the Dodgers win another championship — and he was able to so. He traveled with the team to Arlington, Texas, where he got to see them defeat the Tampa Bay Rays to claim their first World Series title since his tenure as manager.

Lasorda is survived by his wife Jo, their daughter Laura, and granddaughter Emily Tess.

Daddy issues: 'American Gods' returns Sunday night on STARZ

No Comments Entertainment News

STARZ(LOS ANGELES) — What’s worse than having lived a life full of death and loneliness?  How about learning that your dad could’ve helped, but didn’t?  That’s where we find the main character of the STARZ series American Gods as its third season debuts Sunday night at 8 p.m.

Ricky Whittle stars as Shadow Moon, who last season discovered that Ian McShane’s Mr. Wednesday — the eccentric guy who hired him, and then revealed himself to be the Norse god Odin — is also his dad.

“It’s one of those things that’s really relatable in a world of fantasy: You’ve just found out who your father is. I mean, he could be working at a local store, but mine happens to be a god,” Whittle tells ABC Audio.

“So he’s angry. He’s had a terrible life where his mom died of cancer when he was 15. His wife died. He’s had no friends, no family, nothing,” Whittle continues. “And all this time, his father was right there as a god who could have helped him.”

So as season three opens, Shadow is “done” with Wednesday, says Whittle.  Hiding under an assumed name in the seemingly idyllic town of Lakeside, he becomes entangled in a murder mystery while trying to fit in with actual humans for the first time on the show.

“I’ve only ever shared the screen with a god, or my dead wife, [or] a leprechaun,” Whittle laughs of interacting with “basically, a brand-new cast for the season.”

But, Whittle notes, “Once again, he doesn’t fit. And that’s Shadow’s problem every single time. And until he figures out who he is, he’s no help to anyone.”

Meanwhile, Wednesday is still planning a war against the New Gods.  Says Whittle,  Shadow’s “turned his back on destiny — but there’s only so long that you can do that.”
