Alabama quarterback Mac Jones addresses NFL possibility after CFB National Championship win

ABC NewsBy KELLY MCCARTHY, ABC News

(NEW YORK) — University of Alabama quarterback Mac Jones led the undefeated Crimson Tide to a national championship with a victory over Ohio State on Monday night after an unprecedented college football season.

Jones joined ABC News’ Good Morning America on Tuesday morning, just hours after hoisting up the College Football Playoff National Championship trophy in Miami and said “it definitely feels great.”

The 22-year-old junior from Jacksonville, Florida, in his first year as the team’s starter, was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy, threw for over 4,000 yards and won the Davey O’Brien Award given to the nation’s top quarterback.

“We didn’t even know if we were going to have a full season or if we were going to start and then stop, so I just give my hat’s off to the administration and NCAA and SEC for allowing to us play a full season,” he said. “It feels great to be where we are — this is right where we wanted to be — it’s something that we’re all grateful for.”

Jones’ perseverance and drive continued to shine on the field, as he threw for over 400 yards and five touchdown passes in their 52-24 win over the No. 3-ranked Buckeyes, handing them their only loss of the season.

“I just think with anything — regardless of the sport or what you want to do — a lot of people tell you ‘no.’ But if you love something, you can’t listen to the haters as people call them, and do what you do,” Jones said.

After smashing records in the first half of the game, Jones’ teammate and Heisman trophy-winning receiver, DeVonta Smith, suffered a hand injury at the start of the second half. Jones said the words of wisdom from the team’s veteran head coach, Nick Saban, were key to getting them to keep their composure and finish strong.

“Coach Saban’s message — he told us to just stay even-keeled and try not to get too up or too down in the game,” Jones recalled. “Injuries happen — and we had guys out there playing that were young guys, we had guys that were hurt, so just to be out there and try and finish through for our team was just something that Coach Saban has kind of instilled in us.”

Alabama’s win also marked a historic milestone for Saban, who notched his seventh career national championship, moving him past fellow Alabama legend Paul “Bear” Bryant for the most titles in college football history.

Jones, who has one year left of NCAA eligibility, said he has not yet made any decision on if he will play another season at Alabama or opt to enter the NFL draft.

“Honestly, not really,” he said. “I feel like I’ve put myself in a good position to do either one. Obviously I love coach Saban and Alabama, but at the same time there’s a great opportunity in the NFL but I just have to — kind of weigh the pros and cons and look at them and see what’s best for me and my family.”

Chadwick Boseman's widow honors late actor in moving Gotham Awards acceptance speech

No Comments Entertainment News

ABC(NEW YORK) — Chadwick Boseman was honored at the 2021 IFP Gotham Awards, which were held Monday night in New York City.

Variety reports Boseman was honored throughout the night in acceptance speeches from co-star Viola Davis, Sound of Metal‘s Riz Ahmed who took home Best Actor, and director André Holland who worked with Boseman on the Jackie Robinson biopic 42.

A video tribute also played that highlighted the late actor’s most prolific work.

The most emotional speech came from Boseman’s wife, Taylor Simone Ledward, who tearfully accepted the Actor Tribute Award on her husband’s behalf.

“As an artist, an actor, and a person, Chad made a practice of telling the truth.  He is the most honest person I’ve ever met,” said Ledward. “Because he didn’t just stop at speaking the truth, he actively searched for it—in himself, in those around him and in the moment.”

“And so, it became how he lived his life, day in, day out. Imperfect, but determined,” she added, saying his mantra allowed him to live his life to the fullest every day and “be totally present in his own life and the lives of the people he became.”

“He realized when one is able to recognize that their strength does not come from themself, they rarely mess up,” said Ledward. “That’s what he was doing when he was acting. Not merely telling a story or reading lines off a page, but modeling for us a path of true fulfillment.”

She ended her speech with, “Chad, thank you. I love you. I am so proud of you. Keep shining your light on us.”

Today, don't stifle yourself: Wish 'All in the Family' a happy 50th anniversary!

No Comments Entertainment News

Ron Eisenberg/Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) — January 12 marks the 50th anniversary of one of TV’s most groundbreaking shows: All in the Family

Based on the British sitcom Till Death Us Do Part, producer Norman Lear’s series focused on the bigoted, intolerant Archie Bunker.  A loading dock foreman from Queens, NY, he regularly clashed with his liberal daughter and son-in-law Gloria and Mike, aka “Meathead,” on the social issues of the day, while his “dingbat” wife, Edith, ran interference.

All in the Family ran from 1971-79, winning 22 Emmys. Here are five fascinating facts about the show that’s considered one of the greatest in TV history.

5) All in the Family holds the record for having the most spin-offs for a prime-time TV series, with seven — the hits Maude, The Jeffersons, Good Times and Archie Bunker’s Place, plus Gloria, 704 Hauser and Checking In.

4) All in the Family was the first sitcom in which all of the lead actors — Caroll O’Connor, Jean Stapleton, Sally Struthers and Rob Reiner — won Primetime Emmy Awards.  Only three others have done so: The Golden Girls, Will and Grace and Schitt’s Creek.

3) A longer version of the show’s memorable theme song, “Those Were the Days,” with additional lyrics, was released as a single, and reached number 43 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1972.  And did you know that the show’s instrumental ending theme, “Remembering You,” actually has lyrics, written by Carroll O’Connor himself?  By the way, that one lyric that you probably never understood in the opening theme is “Gee, our old LaSalle ran great,” referring to a long-defunct make of automobile.

2) All in the Family was the first major American TV series to be videotaped in front of a live studio audience; no laugh track was ever used.  Due to its success, videotaping sitcoms in front of a live audience became the industry standard.

1) The chairs that Archie and Edith sat in during All in the Family’s run only cost a few dollars at a Goodwill store — but they’re now on display in the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick declines to accept Presidential Medal of Freedom from Trump

(NEW YORK) — Bill Belichick, the head coach of the New England Patriots, said on Monday that he is declining to accept the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Donald Trump, citing last Wednesday’s siege of the U.S. Capitol, which was partly incited by Trump.

“Recently, I was offered the opportunity to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which I was flattered by out of respect for what the honor represents and admiration for prior recipients. Subsequently, the tragic events of last week occurred and the decision has been made not to move forward with the award,” Belichick said in a statement obtained by ESPN.

“Above all, I am an American citizen with great reverence for our nation’s values, freedom and democracy. I know I also represent my family and the New England Patriots team,” he continued. “One of the most rewarding things in my professional career took place in 2020 when, through the great leadership within our team, conversations about social justice, equality and human rights moved to the forefront and became actions. Continuing those efforts while remaining true to the people, team and county I love outweigh the benefits of any individual award.”

ABC News reached out to the White House for comment.

Trump had planned to present Belichick with the Medal of Freedom in a ceremony at the White House on Thursday, a White House official confirmed to ABC News earlier on Monday.

Belichick had been facing public pressure from the sports world and politicians to decline the honor as the outgoing president faces a political firestorm after he helped incite a mob of supporters to attack the U.S. Capitol over false claims the 2020 election was stolen from him.

When the White House announced that Trump planned to honor Belichick, the Patriots again found themselves in the hot seat over the team’s ties with Trump.

Trump has repeatedly hailed the Patriots as “winners,” touted his friendly relationships with Belichick as well as former Patriots quarterback and star Tom Brady and team owner Robert Kraft. He has golfed with Brady and Belichick, dined with Kraft at his Mar-a-Lago Club in Florida and has even suggested as a candidate and president-elect in 2016 that they supported his presidency.

House Democrats filed an article of impeachment against Trump for “incitement of insurrection” on Monday after the violent riot of Trump supporters on Capitol Hill left five people dead.

The riot came after Trump and his most ardent supporters spent weeks after the 2020 election making false claims of election fraud, urging his supporters to have a “strong” response and stated that the protests will be “wild.” Hours before the Capitol siege, the president addressed the group of supporters at a rally on the day that the Senate was set to certify the Electoral College victory of President-elect Joe Biden and encouraged them to head to the Capitol to protest the results.
