No Comments Entertainment News

Courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures(LOS ANGELES) — Talk about rolling in the dough — after the Easter holiday weekend Godzilla vs. Kong has brought its worldwide box office totals to a massive $285.4 million.

The highly anticipated blockbuster, which stars Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Brian Tyree Henry and Rebecca Hall, was released in theaters internationally on March 24 and in the United States on March 31.  Its North American haul over its first five days in theaters stands at $48.5 million.

The monstrous totals means Godzilla vs. Kong enjoyed best movie opening of the COVID-19 era, besting fellow Warner title Wonder Woman 1984‘s previous high of $16.7 million.

The fourth installment in the Legendary Entertainment’s monster universe — following GodzillaKong: Skull Island and, most recently, Godzilla: King of the Monsters — is now being shown in 3,064 North American theaters and is available free of charge to subscribers of the HBO Max streaming service.

Coming in second in the box office was newcomer The Unholy, which opened to a modest $3.2 million, narrowly besting the action movie Nobody, now on its second week in theaters.  The Bob Odenkirk-led film’s box office run now stands at a collective $11.8 million after earning $3 million over the holiday weekend.

Disney’s animated Raya and the Last Dragon slipped into fourth place and earned an additional $2 million.  The film is simultaneously available on the Disney+ streaming service for a premium fee of $30.  Disney is the parent company of ABC News.

Closing out the top five was Tom and Jerry, which collected $1.5 million over the weekend, bumping its overall haul to $39.5 million since it opened in theaters six weeks ago.

Tom and Jerry is also available to HBO Max subscribers free of charge.

Chadwick Boseman wins fourth posthumous award for 'Ma Rainey's Black Bottom'

No Comments Entertainment News

Netflix(LOS ANGELES) — Chadwick Boseman’s memory was honored throughout the 2021 Screen Actor’s Guild Awards, with his fellow actors and friends paying tribute to the late actor’s memory on Sunday night.

In addition to being mentioned by winners Daniel Kaluuya and Viola Davis in their acceptance speeches, who won Best Male Actor in a Supporting Role and Best Female Actress in a Leading Role, respectively — Boseman was also highlighted in the ceremony’s “Im Memoriam” segment.

However, the most emotional moment of the night came when Boseman was awarded the Actor for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for his role in Ma Rainey‘s Black Bottom.

In his stead, Boseman’s widow Simone Ledward Boseman collected the honor and shared some wisdom from the late actor.

“If you see the world unbalanced, be a crusader that pushes heavily on the seesaw of the mind,” she expressed during her emotional acceptance speech. “That’s a quote by Chadwick Boseman.”

She also thanked her late husband’s Ma Rainey co-stars and honored his parents, Leroy and Carolyn Boseman.

This is the Black Panther star’s fourth win since his passing in August 2020.  He has already collected his first Golden Globe, as well as a Gotham Awards, Critics’ Choice Award and a NAACP Award.

The actor is also up for an Oscar for Best Actor at the 2021 Academy Awards, which air April 25.

Boseman is the second posthumous SAG Award nominee, preceded by Massimo Troisi who starred in the 1996 film The Postman.

In addition, is also set the record for most SAG Award nominations in a single year — with four — for his lead role in Ma Rainey’s, supporting role in Da 5 Bloods and for being part of the ensemble in both movies.

Boseman died from stage four colon cancer.  He was 43.

'SNL' cold open mocks cancel culture, Matt Gaetz scandal

Will Heath/NBC(NEW YORK) — Saturday Night Live revived the faux Britney Spears talk show for the cold open, this time tasking comedian Chloe Fineman to parody the “Toxic” singer’s new Georgia-sponsored venture “Oops, You Did It Again.”

Fineman’s Spears was judge and jury as three embattled characters pleaded their case before her, where she would declare them either “innocent” or “not that innocent.”

Up first was Chris Redd as Lil Nas X, who has found himself embroiled in controversy over his “Satan Shoes” and for giving the dark lord a lap dance in his new music video.

Quipped Redd’s Lil Nas X when asked to react to the backlash, “I would say, ‘You know that wasn’t the real Satan, right? It was a dude in a Halloween devil costume.”

He then was tasked to give god a lap dance to balance everything out before being deemed “innocent.”

Up next was Kate McKinnon as disgraced toon Pepé Le Pew, who was axed from the new Space Jam movie for making repeated unwanted advances on Penelope Pussycat.

McKinnon, dressed in a skunk costume, apologizes for acting like a predator and vows to do better, telling Spears that he is currently reading Women are from Mars, Skunks are from France.

Fineman’s Spears deems Le Pew “not that innocent.”

Last up was Pete Davidson parodying disgraced Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz, who is being investigated for alleged sex trafficking over a reported relationship with a 17-year-old girl.

Davidson’s Gaetz claims he’s being attacked for being so supportive of former President Donald Trump and reasoned, “I’m just like Pepé here. I’m just a ladies man.”

McKinnon shoots back, “No. I’m a cartoon skunk, you are a United States Congressman. Be better, ok?”

Fineman’s Spears says she is unable to pass judgement on Gaetz and invites her audience to “judge him by his face.”

Texas Rangers to reopen stadium at full capacity despite COVID-19 case numbers

(ARLINGTON, Texas) — The Texas Rangers are scheduled to make a bold move for their home opener Monday that has some medical experts and President Joe Biden concerned.

Globe Life Field in Arlington will be the first Major League Baseball stadium to reopen at full capacity — roughly 40,000 seats — since the pandemic began. The move comes a month after Texas Gov. Greg Abbott ended the state’s mask mandate and asked businesses to reopen fully, citing declining COVID-19 cases and vaccination numbers.

In a statement released on March 10, Neil Leibman, the team’s president of business operations, said the Rangers were encouraged by the governor’s orders and were taking measures to ensure fans were safe, including requiring masks, except for while eating.

Following Monday’s home opener, the stadium will have sections that allow fans to watch with “distanced seating.”

“We will continue to monitor developments and implement the necessary public health measures,” Leibman said in a statement.

The Houston Astros, Texas’ other MLB team, will only be operating at 50% of Minute Maid Park’s roughly 41,000 seat capacity for April. The stadium will also require masks for fans when they’re not eating.

Dr. Emily Landon, an associate professor of medicine at the University of Chicago, told ABC News last month that baseball and other outdoor sports provide better protection for crowds than indoor arenas, since it’s harder for air particles to linger.

While she said the decision by MLB teams to reopen their games to fans was safe, she warned that the Rangers’ full capacity reopening was riskier, due to the sheer number of people crowded together.

The country is still seeing thousands of cases a day, particularly from the virus variants, Landon noted.

“You don’t know who is going to come in with COVID-19,” she told ABC News.

Biden weighed in on the Rangers’ plans during an interview with ESPN last week, calling the move “not responsible.”

“They should listen to Dr. [Anthony] Fauci, the scientists and the experts. But I think it’s not responsible,” the president said.

Biden warned about potential surges, citing the jumps in European nations that have reopened, and reiterated that vaccinations need to increase before businesses can reopen fully.

“We have to get to the point where enough people have taken the vaccinel, so we diminish the possibility for it to spread,” he said.

The seven-day average of new daily cases in Texas has decreased from 7,693 to 3,667 between March 1 and April 1, according to the state’s health department. As of Sunday, 28% of Texas residents have received one vaccine dose, and 16% are fully vaccinated, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Nationally, about 32% of adults have received one shot, and roughly 18% are fully vaccinated, according to the CDC.
