Judge puts brakes on return to school for COVID-worried Minneapolis teachers

(MINNEAPOLIS) — A judge has granted public school teachers and staff in Minneapolis a temporary restraining order halting the school district’s plan to resume in-person classes this week.

Hennepin County District Court Judge Susan Robiner ruled that the Minneapolis School District cannot force teachers and staff back to classrooms if they previously applied for or are in the process of seeking an accommodation to work remotely due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The risk of contracting a serious illness which has killed almost a half-million people in the United States is axiomatically a profound harm,” Robiner wrote in her 11-page ruling.

School district officials had planned to resume in-person classes on Monday.

“For me, it was huge,” Lindsey West, a fifth-grade teacher at the Barton Open School, told ABC affiliate station KSTP-TV in Minneapolis.

West said she is among those teachers who have applied for accommodation to work from home. She said she lives with her two children and her parents, who are both seniors.

“The idea of exposing them to COVID and something terrible happening to them was the heartbreaking reality that I was dealing with this past week,” West said.

The Minneapolis Federation of Teachers filed the request for an injunction against the school district last Thursday, saying in court papers that the district was making unilateral changes to contracts by refusing to grant accommodations for teachers to work remotely.

Lawyers for the union argued that schools should remain closed until COVID-19 vaccinations are administered to teachers and staff and more safety measures are in place.

“If somebody has a high-risk family member, they should have the option to fill out a form — and other districts have done this — to seek an accommodation. That doesn’t mean MPS has to grant it. But it does mean they have to go through this process,” Greta Callahan, president of the teachers union, told KSTP-TV.

In her ruling issued on Saturday, Robiner noted that 40% of district parents said they would not send their children to in-person classes, while 48% said they would. The remaining parents said they were undecided, according to Robiner’s ruling.

School district officials said in a statement that despite the ruling, they are moving forward with a new plan to resume in-person classes on Feb. 8, one day before another court hearing is scheduled to further discuss the temporary restraining order on accommodations filed by teachers and staff.

“We have said all along that it is our responsibility to continue planning for in-person learning so that when the time is right, we are able to act. Returning a large district to in-person learning is a complex, multifaceted effort and we will continue with our plans until and unless we are directed to do otherwise,” the school district said in a statement.

Other school districts across the country are grappling with similar situations, trying to weigh the concerns of teachers over the pandemic against the demands of parents wanting to send children back to the classroom.

In Chicago, Mayor Lori Lightfoot has threatened to take action against teachers who fail to show up for the first day of in-class scheduled for Tuesday if they do not have an approved accommodation to work remotely. But the Chicago Teachers Union has called the district’s safety plan inadequate.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said during a briefing on Monday that President Joe Biden is hopeful that the Chicago Teachers Union and the Chicago School District can work out a plan that is safe for both children and educators.

“Let me first say the president has enormous respect for Mayor Lightfoot, and he has also been a strong ally to teachers through his entire career,” Psaki said. “They’re both prioritizing the right things, which is ensuring the health and safety of the kids and teachers and working to make sure that children in Chicago are getting the education they deserve. He is hopeful they can reach common ground as soon as possible.”

'Saved by the Bell' co-stars pay tribute to the late Dustin Diamond

No Comments Entertainment News

NBCU Photo Bank/NBCUniversal via Getty Images via Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) — The tributes are pouring in for Saved by the Bell star Dustin Diamond, who died of cancer Monday morning.

Lark Voorhies — who played Lisa Turtle, the high school crush of Diamond’s character Screech on the series — discussed their “warm friendship” in a statement obtained by ABC News.

“Words cannot express the grief that I am feeling right now. Dustin and I had a warm and special friendship, he was a caring gentleman, and my memories of him will always be cherished,” said Voorhies. “I am so very sorry he is gone. But it’s exceptionally sad for his close loved ones who have do deal with his tragic death and their own great loss. My heart goes out to them at this trying time.”

Diamond was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer in January. His co-star Mario Lopez said despite those who took his illness as an “joke,” he optimistically believed Diamond would make a full recovery.

“I actually just spoke with him a couple of weeks ago,” Lopez tells Variety. “He was reluctant to go [to the hospital] for a while because he didn’t know if anything was going to get out. And I said, ‘Bro, that’s foolish, you’ve got to get in there and take care of yourself and forget what people are saying.”

“It’s incredibly hard to process,” said Lopez about Diamond’s passing. “And it’s shocking because he was so young; he was only 44.”

Lopez described Diamond as his “fun, goofy little brother” who “was an integral part of the chemistry and the comedy” on SBTB. “I don’t know if it would have worked without him,” he added.

Lopez plans to eagerly “push for some sort of” tribute to Diamond and his character’s iconic moments, as a producer on the Saved by the Bell revival on Peacock. Although Diamond did not reprise his role, his character was referenced.

After news of Diamond’s passing broke, Mark-Paul Gosselaar, who played Zack Morris mourned the death of “a true comedic genius.” He added, “Looking back at our time working together, I will miss those raw, brilliant sparks that only he was able to produce. A pie in your face, my comrade.” The mixed-ish actor also sent his condolences to Diamond’s family and friends.

No Comments Entertainment News

David M. Benett/Dave Benett/Getty Images for Eco-Age Ltd(LOS ANGELES) — For the first time, Elizabeth Chambers, the ex-wife of Armie Hammer and the mother of his two daughters, is speaking out amid growing accusations against the actor.

As claims against Hammer continue to mount, accusing him of having sordid fantasies involving cannibalism, Chambers took to Instagram Monday.

“For weeks, I’ve been trying to process everything that has transpired,” she began, adding, “I am shocked, heartbroken, and devastated.”

She added, “Heartbreak aside, I am listening, and will continue to listen and educate myself on these delicate matters. I didn’t realize how much I didn’t know,” and stated, “I support any victim of assault or abuse and urge anyone who has experienced this pain to seek the help she or he needs to heal.”

That said, Chambers, an author, TV personality and entrepreneur, said, “At this time, I will not be commenting further on this matter.”

Instead, she thanked fans for their “love and support,” and noted, “My sole focus and attention will continue to be on our children, on my work and on healing during this incredibly difficult time.”

The initial allegations, reportedly culled from leaked and unverified sexting DMs, led Hammer to drop out of the Jennifer Lopez film Shotgun Wedding.  In a statement to Entertainment TonightHammer later called the first allegations “bulls***…” and “…vicious and spurious online attacks…”

More recently, Hammer’s 22-year-old ex-girlfriend, Paige Lorezne, made new and disturbing claims to the Daily Mail, insisting he was “obsessed” with the idea of “taking a piece of me…and consuming it.”

In a statement to DailyMail.com, Hammer’s lawyer called those claims “patently untrue,” and that, “Any interactions with [Lorenze], or any partner of his, were completely consensual in that they were fully discussed, agreed upon, and mutually participatory.'”
