Boston's new police commissioner put on leave after domestic violence allegations surface

(BOSTON) — The newly appointed commissioner of the Boston Police Department has been placed on administrative leave over allegations of domestic violence.

Shortly after Dennis White was sworn in as commissioner on Monday, an allegation of domestic violence from 1999 surfaced in which White’s wife accused him of pushing and hitting her, the Boston Globe reported, citing court records.

White was accused of saying he “wanted to shoot” his wife and an acquaintance after an incident at a friend’s home, ABC Boston affiliate WCVB reported.

A restraining order was issued against White on May 5, 1999, that required White to vacate his home, surrender his service weapon and stay away from his wife and family, according to WCVB. He denied the allegations at the time, according to court filings. It does not appear he was charged with a crime.

Two days after White was sworn in by Boston Mayor Marty Walsh, he was placed on administrative leave.

White was asked “to quickly step into the role” in an attempt to “create a smooth transition” and honor former Boston Police Commissioner William Gross’ desire to spend time with his family, Walsh said in a statement.

“These disturbing issues were not known to me or my staff, but should have been at the forefront,” Walsh, who is currently in Washington, D.C., for his Senate confirmation hearing for his Labor Secretary nomination, said in the statement. “Upon learning of these serious allegations, I immediately acted, placing the Commissioner on administrative leave, while corporation counsel engages outside counsel to conduct a full and impartial investigation.”

Boston mayors have the sole authority to appoint the police commissioner but often take their time in the selection, the Globe reported. Typically, a national search is conducted, as is an effort to involve the public, according to the newspaper.

Gross, who served as commissioner for more than two years and was with the department for 37 years, retired Friday, WCVB reported. White has been with the department for 32 years, previously serving as chief of staff to Gross and deputy superintendent in the Bureau of Field Services Night Command.

Superintendent-in-Chief Gregory Long will serve as acting commissioner in the meantime, Walsh said.

ABC News could not immediately reach White for comment. It is unclear whether he has retained an attorney.

Former President Donald Trump quits Screen Actors Guild ahead of a possible ouster

No Comments Entertainment News

ABC/ Ida Mae Astute(LOS ANGELES) — Before he was president, Donald Trump was a fixture on TV and made the occasional movie cameo, and as such was a card-carrying member of the showbiz performers union SAG-AFTRA.

However, that is no more.

Trump quit the organization Thursday, after SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris and National Executive Director David White on January 19 announced a disciplinary hearing against him over what the organization claims was “Trump’s role in inciting the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6,” and in “sustaining a reckless campaign of misinformation aimed at…journalists, many of whom are SAG-AFTRA members.”

In his resignation letter from the union, former President Trump said, “I write to you today regarding the so-called Disciplinary Committee hearing aimed at revoking my union membership. Who cares!”

He added of the SAG-AFTRA heads, “While I’m not familiar with your work, I’m very proud of my work on movies such as Home Alone 2Zoolander and Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps; and television shows including The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Saturday Night Live, and of course, one of the most successful shows in television history, The Apprentice – to name just a few!”

Trump called the announcement of the disciplinary action a “blatant attempt at free media attention to distract from your dismal record as a union.”

He commented, “Your organization has done little for its members, and nothing for me – besides collecting dues and promoting dangerous un-American policies and ideas – as evident by your massive unemployment rates and lawsuits from celebrated actors, who even recorded a video asking, ‘Why isn’t the union fighting for me?'”

Trump closed with, “I no longer wish to be associated with your union…You have done nothing for me.”

In response, Cateris and White replied only, “Thank you.”

Reid LongIf you’re a member of Eric Church’s Church Choir fan club, you’re in luck: You’ve got access to the singer’s two new exclusive tracks.

Those songs are “Lone Wolf” and “Lynyrd Skynyrd Jones.” The former track is the sixth and final song listed on his middle album, &, which will be available exclusively on vinyl to the Church Choir when it drops in April.

Meanwhile, “Lynyrd Skynyrd Jones” is the final track on Soul, the last of Eric’s three-album collection. Along with those tracks, the singer also released studio videos of each song to the Church Choir on Thursday.

Eric will roll out his triple album during the month of April, with Heart arriving on April 16, & on April 20 and Soul on April 23.

The songs were written and recorded during a marathon music-making retreat that Eric and his team undertook early in 2020: They headed to the North Carolina mountains to work in a makeshift studio. The project features Eric’s touring band, including fan-favorite backing vocalist and frequent duet partner Joanna Cotten, as well as producer Jay Joyce.

Eric has previously shared several songs off the new project, and his current single, “Hell of a View,” is currently nearing the Top 20 at country radio.
