Shaq names his ideal 'Big 3,' talks new ad, NBA predictions

(NEW YORK) — Any former teammate of Shaquille O’Neal would likely tell you that having him on the court was the sports equivalent of a great insurance policy.

The NBA Hall of Famer told ABC News’ Good Morning America that “trust and credibility were very important” throughout his 19-year NBA career, and now he’s applying those values to a new campaign with a brand that’s been by his side since college.

“In 1989 when I bought a used Ford Bronco 2, I didn’t have insurance, went to all these places I couldn’t afford, then I went to The General and they gave me an affordable policy, and it was great. I never had to use it,” he said with a laugh. “But hey, I had the full coverage I needed.”

Shaq first teamed up with the brand nearly a decade ago.

“I’m watching Maury Povich, ’cause that was my routine every day, and I would hear the jingle with The General commercial, and I said, ‘Hey I’d love to let the world know about the quality insurance that your company offers’ — and we’ve been in a relationship every since,” he said.

But now, the company known for its computer-animated ads is evolving its image with the help of the 15-time NBA All-Star and a couple of his friends from Inside the NBA.

Shaq said “it was a lot of fun” filming on set with fellow NBA analysts Kenny Smith and Ernie Johnson.

“We had a lot of outtakes. But it’s also great to tell your friends ‘I told you so,'” Shaq said. “A lot of people look at the commercial and think they’re too cheesy, but nope, they’re quality insurance.”

Thinking about other famous basketball trios, the four-time NBA champion said if he could build his own Big Three with any other players of all time, it would be “Me, Michael Jordan and Jason ‘White Chocolate’ Williams.”

One real-life matchup on Shaq’s calendar is his All Elite Wrestling in-ring debut. He’s wrestling Cody Rhodes on March 3 in a mixed tag-team bout, “so I’m gonna have to beat him up,” he said.

When asked about his training, he said “I can’t tell ya, I’ll just have to show ya.”

Although the 2020-21 NBA “season is still young” Shaq said that “Utah, the Lakers and Brooklyn are all playing well.”

Shaq will be in on the All-Star Weekend action and back with Inside the NBA on TNT for the second part of the regular season, but he said “there are about four or five teams in contention to become champions.”

“I’m biased,” he said after seeing the Lakers take home the title last season, “but I want to see the best players shine and the best team win.”

Kenny Chesney waltzes with a beloved memory on "Knowing You"

No Comments Country Music News

Allister AnnKenny Chesney‘s leaning into the traditional side of country music for the new single from his Here and Now album.

“Well, it’s one of the reasons I wanted to record ‘Knowing You,’” the superstar from East Tennessee explains.

“It was just the melody,” he says of its appeal. “Look, you don’t hear a waltz every day on the radio now, but this one was written with this beautiful melody twisted within that waltz.”

“Knowing You” pays homage to a relationship you treasured that’s past, be it romantic, familial, or friendly. It’s a sentiment Kenny was eager to express.

“What it says was so important to me, you know,” he tells ABC Audio, “because it just talks about having someone in your life that was very important, that’s not there anymore, but it’s still not a negative thing.”

“Who knows why they’re not there?” he continues. “They could have just moved on, you guys moved on, or they could have passed or whatever.”

“The song is just simply a reflection of how blessed you are to have known that person at all,” he adds. “And hopefully they’re somewhere out there in the universe thinking the same thing.”

We’ll find out more about Kenny’s interpretation of “Knowing You” in the days to come, as he releases a music video he took a week to shoot last fall.

Viola Davis talks Chadwick Boseman, playing Michelle Obama

Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images for Turner(LOS ANGELES) — Viola Davis recently sat down with Entertainment Tonight to discuss her recent turn in the Netflix film, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and her upcoming role as former first lady Michelle Obama in Showtime’s anthology series The First Lady, including words of praise for her Ma Rainy co-star Chaddwick Boseman.

“A lot of times when Black actors are nominated for any award or get any accolades or get a spotlight, it is always with a caveat that it is only happening because we’re Black, or it is only happening because such and such and such and such. It’s never deserved,” she says.

However, that’s not true of Boseman, who has racked up a number of posthumous award nominations this season.

“Chadwick Boseman deserves it,” Davis insists.  “This is someone who did the work, who learned the trumpet.  I mean, those long three, four-page monologues, are you kidding me?  He did the work, and he did an extraordinary job.”

Boseman died last August at age 43.

Ma Rainey, based on the August Wilson play of the same name, centers on an afternoon recording session for titular blues singer in 1920s Chicago.

Meanwhile, the 55-year-old actress will next star as Michelle Obama in the Showtime series, The First Lady.  Davis, a friend of the former first lady, says preparing for the role was a humbling experience.

“Now I am in the place of…I’m not going to lie, a lot of fear,” she tells ET. “Let me tell you something, she’s dope.  She’s everything. She’s a hero.  She is just one of those women and people that lives a life bigger than herself, and I hope to honor that.”

Neighbor gives up COVID-19 vaccine appointment to stranger in need

No Comments National News

ABCBy HALEY YAMADA and ERIC NOLL, ABC News

(AUSTIN, Texas) — As many struggle to get a vaccine appointment, two neighbors who met online found a way to help each other.

Grandmother Emily Johnson of Austin, Texas, was in need of open-heart surgery, but her doctor said she had to have one vaccination before the operation. After spending hours on the phone to set up a vaccination appointment, she reached out to her neighbors on the website Nextdoor.

“Hello Neighbors! I am a 68-yr-old female facing open heart surgery,” Johnson wrote on Jan. 7. “My doctors here in Austin have no access to the vaccine, so I have been spending up to an hour each morning, putting my name on lists and making dozens of phone calls. Has anyone out there heard anything or have a suggestion to make?”

A stranger came to her aid. Christy Lewis said Johnson could have her appointment.

“You need this much more than I do. If you can make this appointment, it’s yours,” Lewis shared in a message to Johnson.

“I was both stunned and obviously elated. I couldn’t believe that someone would be giving such a coveted thing to a complete stranger,” Johnson said.

On Jan. 8, Lewis, who has an autoimmune disease and is deemed a high-risk individual, and Johnson decided to go to the appointment together.

They said the supervisor listened to their story and vaccinated both of the women that day.

Johnson told “World News Tonight” she is now ready for surgery. She said she was overcome by Lewis’ kindness.

“What I realized through all this is that even though we hear all kinds of sad stories happening in our country, there are truly wonderful people amongst us committing incredible acts of kindness,” Johnson said.

Lewis said that she gave Johnson her appointment because it was the right thing to do.

“[Johnson] has a long road ahead of her,” Lewis said. “I was happy to help just a little bit.”
