MLB's opening day marked by a COVID-19 postponement, weather impacts and limited fans

No Comments Sports News

nuttiwut rodbangpong/iStock(NEW YORK) — COVID-19- and weather-related postponements and limited but enthusiastic fans marked MLB’s highly anticipated opening day.

Stadiums across the country welcomed back fans Thursday for the first time in over a year, after teams played to mostly empty or cardboard cutout-filled stands last season due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Both the pandemic and inclement weather made for some day-of derailments. Thursday evening’s Washington Nationals home game against the New York Mets was postponed amid “ongoing contact tracing” among members of the Nationals organization, the team announced.

“Out of an abundance of caution, the game will not be made up on Friday,” the league’s built-in off day, the Nationals said in a statement. “We will continue to provide updates as available.”

The Nationals would have been down five players and a staff member after a player tested positive for COVID-19, ESPN reported.

The Red Sox opener against the Baltimore Orioles was also postponed — due to the weather. With a forecast calling for rain throughout the day in the Boston area, team officials announced Thursday’s afternoon game will be rescheduled to Friday — forecast to have sunny skies.

“The decision to postpone our first game of the season was not made lightly,” Red Sox President Sam Kennedy said in a statement. “We have been eager to have fans back at Fenway Park for the first time in 18 months and look forward to welcoming everyone back tomorrow under brighter and drier conditions.”

Snow didn’t stop the Detroit Tigers’ home opener against the Cleveland Indians. The first pitch was thrown in 32-degree weather. Slugger Miguel Cabrera hit his first home run of the season in the first inning as snow came down at Comerica Park. The Tigers went on to clinch the win, 3-2.

With most stadiums not opening to full capacity due to COVID-19 safety protocols, stands were noticeably lacking the typically packed crowds on opening day. For instance, Comerica Park, which can normally hold 42,000 fans, is limited to 8,200.

“It’s quieter than normal on opening day, but, at the end of the day, you make the best of it,” Tigers fan Andrew Postema, who drove from Grand Rapids for the game, told ABC Detroit affiliate WXYZ.

Chicago’s Wrigley Field is limited to 25% capacity — about 10,000 fans. They entered using contactless tickets on their phones, one of several safety measures in place this season, along with required face coverings (which present the opportunity for fans to wear masks emblazoned with their team’s logo).

“The fans are real excited to come out,” Cubs fan Shawn Greene told Chicago ABC station WLS. “I’m sure this place would be crowded but it’s just good to be back.”

Fans going to the New York Yankees this season are required to have proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test. The stadium, one of the city’s mass vaccination sites, is also continuing to administer vaccinations between home games through at least the end of the month, officials said.

Stuart Goldwasser told New York ABC station WABC he paid $900 for him and his son to be one of the nearly 11,000 fans on opening day at Yankee Stadium, which is limited to 20% capacity.

“Had COVID, got through it and we’re here and we’re going to win the World Series,” Goldwasser said.

“We always come to opening day,” his son told the station. “We come to a bunch of games every year. It was tough not to be here for a couple of years.”

'Legion' star Dan Stevens replaces Armie Hammer in Watergate drama 'Gaslit'

No Comments Entertainment News

Visual China Group via Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) — Dan Stevens, veteran of Disney’s hit Beauty and the Beast live-action film and recently seen in FX’s Legion, is replacing embattled actor Armie Hammer in the Watergate drama Gaslit

Variety reports Stevens will now play John Dean, President Richard Nixon’s former attorney, in the project, which is about the lesser-known players involved in the 1970s scandal that eventually destroyed the Nixon presidency.

In February, it was announced that Hammer would be re-cast in the Starz drama, which will also star Sean Penn and Julia Roberts.

Hammer has weathered multiple accusations of assault and the publication of salacious DMs allegedly sent by the star from one of his accusers. His attorney denied all claims against the actor, recently declaring, “Mr. Hammer has maintained that all of his interactions with [the accuser] —  and every other sexual partner of his for that matter — have been completely consensual…and mutually participatory.”

Since the accusations came to light, Hammer stepped away from the project Shotgun Wedding, with Jennifer Lopez, and a series called The Offer, about the making of The Godfather.

He was also recently dropped from the Cold War thriller Billion Dollar Spy, which will star Mads Mikkelsen.

Legay RecordingsLoretta Lynn’s Still Woman Enough debuts in the number-nine spot on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart, according to the ranking dated April 3.

That marks the 88-year-old country legend’s 42nd top-10 entry on the chart. That feat’s been bested only by Willie Nelson, who has 53 top-10 albums under his belt, and Dolly Parton, who has 46. Still Woman Enough is Loretta’s 46th solo studio album overall.

“I just can’t ever say how much I love my fans. They’ve been there with me all the way,” the singer wrote on her Facebook page. “Kicking off a seventh decade in country music with a Billboard Top Ten album sure has a way of making a girl happy. Love y’all.”

The 13-track Still Woman Enough offers new recordings of some of Loretta’s best-loved hits, including a few duet renditions with some of today’s most prominent women in country music. Margo Price and Tanya Tucker each feature on a song, while both Reba McEntire and Carrie Underwood lend their voices to the title track.

Still Woman Enough arrived on March 19.

ABC/Liane Hentcher(LOS ANGELES) — Lauren Graham, Gilmore Girls matriarch and current star of Disney+’s The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, has a problem with her neighbor, Dax Shepard.

Shepard and his wife Kristen Bell are apparently renovating their home, Graham vented on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and in the meantime, gearhead Shepard “basically took…the front lawn, and turned it into a massive driveway for all of his cars.”

What’s more, the family is apparently camping out in, “the most massive band tour bus you’ve ever seen.”

“He’s out of his mind,” Graham vented, laughing. “Andy they’re never getting rid of it, Jimmy. He bought that.”

She also adds, “he rides around like topless on his motorcycle. You have to just love him. Like a brother.”  Graham played Shepard’s sister in the TV series Parenthood

You can’t change your family — even your TV family.

Speaking of which, Graham’s dating Peter Krause, her other TV brother from Parenthood. He “lives in my bedroom,” she admits with a laugh. “It’s confusing for some people.”

Blake Shelton serves up hard seltzer, country style, with new Smithworks Hard Seltzer Lemonade line

No Comments Country Music News

Carmen Mandato/Getty ImagesThis week, Blake Shelton launched a four-flavor selection of Smithworks Hard Seltzer Lemonade, with Classic Lemon, Ripe Strawberry, Crisp Lime and Southern Peach Tea.

That move may seem like a left turn for the star, who has long named vodka as his drink of choice, but he says he’s developed a taste for the fizzy stuff as it’s risen in popularity over the last year.

“I started tasting [different hard seltzers] and getting into it, and we finally decided we should do this,” Blake tells USA Today. “This is something people are doing out on the lake, they’re having this kind of a summertime drink, and that’s what I’m all about.”

The singer knows some members of his country-leaning target demographic might be hesitant to trade in their beer for a seltzer, but he’s hoping to country up his new beverage with a sweet, Southern, lemonade twist.

“I want Smithworks to be associated with country lifestyle and country living,” he adds. “I know I’m not going to be able to steer the hard seltzer world to the country lifestyle, but maybe we can steer the Smithworks version of it that way.”

Great minds think alike, apparently: Blake’s fellow country superstar Luke Bryan also released his own line of Two Lane hard seltzers last month.
