Disney+ casts Iman Vellani to play 'Ms. Marvel,' the first Muslim superhero

Disney+(LOS ANGELES) — From comic books to the big screen — Ms. Marvel will be brought to life by newcomer Iman Vellani for the upcoming Disney+ series Ms. Marvel, Deadline reports.

The series, which will make history as Marvel’s first on-screen Muslim hero, is based on the relatively new comic book character. The story follows Kamala Khan, a Pakistani-American teen from New Jersey with shape shifting abilities.

Ms. Marvel first appeared on the scene in 2014 as Marvel’s first Muslim character to star in her own title.

In addition to making it to the small screen, when Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige announced the Disney+ series last summer, he also shared that Ms. Marvel will be included in future Marvel films as well.

Although the casting hasn’t been officially confirmed, G. Willow Wilson — who wrote the Ms. Marvel comic — and head writer of the upcoming series, Bisha K. Ali, both made remarks on Twitter.

Ali kept things simple by tweeting the smiling emoji with hearts, while Wilson shared, “I guess this news is out. Congrats, Iman! She is the real deal.”

Eternals star Kumail Nanjiani also took a moment to share his thoughts on the news

“I just saw they cast Ms. Marvel and legit got teary eyed,” he tweeted. “Congratulations Iman Vellani! Your work is going to mean so much to so many people, myself included. I can’t wait.”
